To be raped and paraded naked.
This is the abhorrent punishment that two young sisters are now facing as ordered by an unelected, all-male village council in northern India.
23-year-old Meenakshi and her 15-year-old sister have fled their home in fear for their safety. The council ordered the rape as punishment for their brother's elopement with a married woman.
This is illegal and a grave abuse of their human rights.Demand immediate intervention to protect the sisters.
"They don't listen to us. The police don't listen to us. The police said anyone can be murdered now." - Sumit Kumar, the sisters' other brother
The sisters' family made complaints to local authorities, but now face more harassment from the village, as well as from police. Act now to tell the state's Director General of Police and Chief Minister that the world demands their protection.
I can only imagine the fear and helplessness that the whole family is feeling. Please join the thousands of people around the world demanding justice and their protection.
In solidarity,
