Volunteers save 2,000 cats from being shipped to restaurants
Animal activists in Jiangsu Province managed to rescue 2,000 cats that were being transported to Guangdong Province, where they would have been cooked and blended into pork or rabbit meat served at local restaurants.
The cats were saved after activists discovered the truck and called the police to stop it in the middle of the highway. Now the police have taken away the abducted animals and are working to trace their owners, from whom they had been stolen.
With animal rights becoming an increasingly debated issue in China, there have been a number of such incidents in recent years, which have at times even led to scuffles or conflicts between illegal traders and activists.
