Authorities confirmed Friday night that the victim was 48-year-old DCF employee Lara Sobel. Barre police have arrested the suspect, 40-year-old Jody Herring of Barre Town.

An employee of the Department for Children and Families was fatally shot outside a state office building in Barre on Friday, Gov. Peter Shumlin's office announced.

  Phyllis Carter -  I have said it before and I will say it again. We need more insane asylums and fewer guns. But who cares? The murders go on and on and on and everyone says how sad it is. And the Amercan people keep defending their right to bear arms. See how it is helping them. When a 22 is enough for anyone for target practice or self defense, they insist on bigger and bigger machine guns. We are even hearing of little children shooting each other to death now. Tears and tsk-tsk and chicken soup will not save the next victims.
