I think he hated himself for being drawn to act on his feelings. His version of God, Islam, pulled him one way. His body pulled him another. He came to a boiling point. Instead of reaching out for help, he exploded. 

Claiming allegiance to ISIS gave him justification for his crime and made him feel important, connected. He belonged. There was a good reason to slaughter innocent people. Islam gave him an excuse. 

The AR weapon gave him the power to satisfy his impotence. Firing those bullets he was ejaculating. 

This was a mass-murder-sex-suicide.
