The heart of Little Italy holds a secret - well, it's not really much of a secret, but it did cause quite a problem back in the day. On Dante Street, between Henri-Julien and Alma, sits one of Montreal's oldest Italian churches, the church of Our Lady of Defense, known to Italians as Chiesa della Madonna della Difesa. Inaugurated in 1919 and best known for its fresco depicting fascist leader Benito Mussolini, this place of worship has been declared a National Historic Site of Canada ...
The once troublesome fresco of Benito Mussolini (to find him, look for the guy on the horse) went up before the war and was a tribute to the Lateran Accords, an agreement made between the Italian government and the Pope. The fresco was covered during the war years and its creator, Guido Nincheri, was actually interned for a short time, accused of being a fascist sympathizer. According to Father Luca, the fresco also includes depictions of a member of the Italian royal family, a Canadian MP (or possibly Montreal clergy member) and Italian inventor Guglielmo Marconi, who won the Nobel Prize for physics for his contribution to radio technology.

To this day, this community prays to Jesus under the dome of Chiesa della Madonna della Difesa Church in Montreal with the fresco of the murderer of thousands of innocent people, Benito Mussolini, looking down on them from his horse, while dignitaries of the Church bless him.
If Mussolini is acceptable in church, why not Hitler?
