Lawyers become politicians,
Who make laws to ensure that
Lawyers benefit and prosper,
Not the innocent,
Not crime victims.
Lawyers become judges,
Who determine what the laws mean,
And what testimony may be accepted,
And whether a criminal goes free,
Or an innocent person is imprisoned:
They are as gods among us,
With sacrosanct power over our lives.
I want to see justice in our police departments,
And in our courts.
I want to hear ALL the evidence in a case,
Not just the parts that are "permissible",
Not just the parts the lawyers want us to hear.
But I dream in technicolour:
Once it was priests who decided life or death.
Now it is lawyers who determine our fate.
