Does the world have a responsibility to protect the citizens of Syria? Today on Newshour, we speak to the former UN military commander who tried to stop the Rwandan genocide, General Romeo Dallaire. Join Claire Bolderson at 1200 & 1400GMT.

One criminal regime is replaced with a different criminal regime. It is the innocent who always suffer. Hatred and greed lead to bloodshed, but it is mostly the innocent whose blood pours into the streets and ditches. Finally, the new tyranny takes over and everyone forgives and forgets. But the innocent are left maimed, grieving or dead. Am I a pessimist? No. I have seen decades of history and war and I know whereof I speak. Politics, games, strategies, money, power, oil, fanatical religion, arms dealers - all serve to remove the weak and give power to the worst elements of humanity. It is survival of the most selfish, the most brutal, the most insane. Shall we help them? Who should we help? If we help the suffering Islamists, will they not turn on us?
