Phyllis Carter Those who want to communicate can always manage to do so - in any language. I don't talk to people I don't like in any language. When I was young, I was getting up into a street car in Montreal. The weather was bad and the street car was crowded. I had trouble pushing my way in. The driver shouted at me in a very rude way to hurry up - in French. I was not about to give him the satisfaction of knowing I understood him. I answered him in YIDDISH. There was nothing he could do to get back at me. On the other hand, when a busload of protesters from St. Leonard with me on board arrived at Parliament Hill to demand that their children be allowed to learn English as well as French, we managed to communicate with each other in a little bit of French and a little bit of English and a little bit of Italian and little bit of salami and a little bit of red wine. Si on veux - on peux.
