Westboro Baptist Church Plans Picket At Hailey Owens Vigil

10-Year-Old Girl Found Shot, Killed This Week

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. —The Westboro Baptist Church is planning to picket at a vigil for Hailey Owens..

The 10-year-old Springfield, Mo., girl was found dead this week.  A 45-year-old middle-school football coach, Craig Michael Wood, is charged with her kidnapping and shooting death.

An Amber Alert was issued across multiple states Tuesday night as Owens disappeared.

The Topeka, Kan.-based Westboro Baptist Church protests at funerals around the country, contending that U.S. soldiers and others are being struck down by God for defending a nation that tolerates homosexuality.

In the past few days, multiple viewers contacted the KMBC 9 News Facebook Page to attempt coordinating a counter-rally.

The Twitter account @WBCSays posted Friday afternoon "silly human wall in Springfield (Saturday) and #HaileyOwens still is dead.  You love proud sin more than neighbors."

According to multiple media reports, the vigil is scheduled for 8 p.m. Saturday on Commercial Street in Springfield.
