Authorities discovered "human remains" Friday in a container in an Utica, New York, river that could be those of missing infant Levon Wameling.
Levon was 9 months old when he went missing on May 29. His father, Javon Wameling, claimed that he took the baby on a walk late at night and accidentally locked himself out of the house. He left the baby alone on the front porch while looking for a way in and claims that he disappeared.
Wameling did not report that his son was missing until June 11, when the baby's grandmother repeatedly asked about Levon's whereabouts. Wameling also claimed that he spent two weeks searching for Levon before eventually notifying authorities. At the time of Levon's disappearance, his mother was away in a rehab program.
Upstate New York police searched for Levon for months with no luck. On Thursday, Javon Wameling was arrested on burglary charges by state police that were unrelated to the missing child. Then Friday, authorities made a breakthrough when state police divers went to the Mohawk River where they found the container. It is not yet known what led authorities to make the discovery.
Utica Police Chief Mark Williams held a news conference Friday, saying an autopsy will confirm whether the remains are those of the missing infant, who would have turned 1 year old on August 30.
"I can't give you a timeframe for when charges may or may not even be filed. I don't know," Williams said. "There's a lot of work that still needs to be done on our end. This is still a very active investigation. I'm hopeful at the very least, that once we identify those remains that, first and foremost, we can bring closure to the family."
According to the Utica Observer-Dispatch, Amy Warney, Levon's mother, posted on Facebook that her son's body was found. Those posts have since been removed.
Javon Wameling is currently in the Oneida County jail.
