QUEBEC SEPARATE FROM CANADA IS LUDICROUS - A RED HERRING

The idea of a Quebec separate from Canada right in the middle of Canada is really quite ridiculous. Let's call in the Martians and have them snip the province off the map and put it somewhere else. For other thoughts and experiences on the subject, see PHYLLIS CARTER'S JOURNAL - MY ARTICLES ON QUEBEC

I was at protests for human rights in the early 1970's when I stood on Parliament Hill with the community of Italian Canadians fighting for the right of their children to learn English.

I agree with you, Phyllis. Quebec should remain in Canada. We should no longer allow Quebec to hold the rest of Canada hostage...no more catering to their every whim. They should not be allowed to continue their tirade against the English language. Canada is bilingual. Speak English or speak French or if you are bilingual so much the better. We should ignore their threats of separating and not give them incentives to stay. If individuals in Quebec are not satisfied with Canada, let them leave Quebec and Canada and find a country they like. Quebec should remain in Canada. Any vote with respect to any province separating should be put to all Canadians, not just to those who happen to be living in a given province. Canada, including Quebec belong to all Canadians, not to a select few.

Joan Can you tell us when Qc has held Canada hostage?
and when we cater to their every whim
When you used such statement you argument appear unfounded.
As for "Their " tirade against the English language
50 % voted to stay in Canada
It is a minority PQ gov who is pandering to their base

Not only a"'minority government" - the voice of extremists. There are two doctors in my life, an oncologist and a general practitioner. Both these young men are about the age that they could be my sons. Both of these doctors have kept me alive and hopeful for many years through their skill and their devotion and care. Both are Christians - the real kind - and both are what popular parlance now calls Francophones. I owe my life to these Quebecers. Do I care if they should want to speak French? Not a bit. The language issue is a red herring. an ugly lie used by greedy extremists. Both my doctors want to protect the French language in Quebec, but they are not fanatics. They are decent men, exemplars. But politicians have no heart and they would call you a statistic if you left Quebec, or if you died.

Gordon. First let me explain. I am from Quebec and my heart will always belong to Montreal. I have family (aunts and uncles, grandchildren and great grandchildren) that are French Canadian and have been brought up in the French language. I have many French Canadian friends that are very dear to my heart, individuals that I have worked with over the years that are marvelous. I love the French language, It is music to my ears. It is a beautiful language. Because I hold Quebec so dear, I perhaps overstate to a certain extent.

With respect to holding Canada hostage.....The Laporte kidnapping (granted extremist) is not unfounded? The constant threat of separating is not unfounded? Quebec gets away with being unilingual while the rest of Canada is bilingual. You don't feel there have been concessions made? My grandchildren and great grandchildren are at disadvantage and have little chance of finding employment anywhere outside the Quebec province because they are, for the most part, unilingual. I believe both French and English should be taught in all Canadian schools. It is healthy for individuals to be bilingual and given that English is, for the most part, the language of business in the rest of the world, give them a chance to learn it so that they may be able to find employment outside of Quebec if they so desire it. At least give them the chance to communicate with the rest of the world. The children of Quebec are at a huge disadvantage. Give emphasis to the French language, yes, but this movement to retain the French culture in Quebec has been taken to the extreme. It is a wonderful culture and I wouldn't ever want to see it lost. It gives Quebec a flavour not found anywhere else in Canada. There was a time when Montreal was thought to be very cosmopolitan. I wonder if that hasn't been lost.

With respect to tirade, I refer to the language police situation which to my mind has gotten a little bit out of control. Like in the past with all issues throughout history, people always choose to take it to the extreme when attempting to correct a situation.

In my opinion Quebec is shooting themselves in the foot and I gather 50% realize, but 50 % don't get it. It is annoying.

How clearly you see the truth, Joan. Thanks for publishing this piece. I may want to copy it to my blog. Would that he okay with you ? As of today, I have 106,000 readers around the world. Maybe someone out there cares enough to do justice

No problem, Phyllis. Please feel free to copy it.
