THIS HERO FACED FIERY DEATH FOR STRANGERS

The charred small plane still rests upside down on Milton Street near Van Dyke and Lynch in Detroit.

And authorities are lauding the efforts of bystanders who tried to rescue the passengers trapped inside the plane after it crashed suddenly in a fiery blast on their sleepy street.

Detroit Police Captain Mark Thornton says a resident helped the lone survivor emerge from the wreckage that killed two other passengers.

"I couldn't let him die there," Cordell Owens told WWJ's Charlie Langton at the scene. Owens says he used an axe to break a window - helping a 17-year-old boy from the burning plane Sunday night.
