THE OCTOBER CRISIS - I WAS THERE

October 5, 2010

I was on Place d'Armes facing Notre Dame Basilica for Pierre Laporte's funeral. Our family had paid our respects at his coffin the previous day. I was interviewed by Swiss television as soldiers with fixed bayonets stood before me and snipers looked down from the rooftops. My picture appeared in a Montreal newspaper.

At a meeting at the YMHA in Montreal some time earlier, Mrs. Laporte had called me her husband's friend. I was surprised since I had given him a hard time over the language issue.

Along with Bobby Beale, I had helped get children from St. Leonard to underground schools where they could learn the forbidden English language. I was with hundreds of Italian-Canadians on Parliament Hill to demand freedom of language. My poster reading FREE MAN CHOKES ON FORCE-FED LANGUAGE could be seen above the crowd in a photograph published in The Montreal Star. Oh, yes. I remember it well.

Busting the common myths about the October Crisis

FLQ terrorists killed six and committed 200 bombings, robberies from 1963-70

Forty years ago today, what is now remembered as the October Crisis started with the abduction of British diplomat James Richard Cross, by Front de liberation du Quebec terrorists purporting to act in the name of Quebec secession and socialist revolution. On Oct. 10, Quebec Labour Minister Pierre Laporte was also abducted while playing ball with his nephew on the front lawn of his home. He would be assassinated by his kidnappers on Oct. 17.

In Quebec as elsewhere, myths are persistent, especially when they are used to mask the weaknesses of nationalist ideology and the errors of judgment of the movement they support. The deformation of the memory of the October Crisis is one of the most obvious examples of such historical revisionism. Indeed, the assassins and supporters of violence have become victims, while the defendants of the rule of law have been renamed as oppressors.

As Talleyrand said: "In politics, what is believed becomes the truth." This interpretation dictated by a certain separatist leadership, through ignorance, carelessness, irresponsibility or for the benefit of their cause, in fact contributes to the trivialization of violence and its consequences in a democratic society.

In his October Crisis 1970: An Insider's View (McGill-Queen's University Press (2007), freshly published this week in French by Editions Heritage and re-edited by Mc-Gill-Queen's in paperback), William Tetley, law professor at McGill University, minister in the Bourassa cabinet during the crisis, has succeeded in brilliantly taming the most commonly held myths about the October Crisis.

It is high time that all Canadians be reminded that:

The FLQ terrorists, who from 1963 until the summer of 1970, killed six people while committing more than 200 bombings and thefts -including the 1969 bombing of the Montreal Stock Exchange, which ripped through the facade of the building leaving 27 wounded -were not "political" prisoners.

Pierre Trudeau and Bourassa were right not to negotiate with criminals; history will recognize their courageous struggle against those who threatened the rule of law through violence and blackmail, thereby jeopardizing the democratic process.

The 16 "eminent personalities," including Rene Levesque, Jacques Parizeau, Claude Ryan, and union leaders, who signed the petition of Oct. 14, 1970, calling for negotiations with the terrorists and the release of "political prisoners," instead of a clear and unequivocal request for the unconditional and immediate release of the two hostages, provided valuable de-facto support for the terrorists, rather than siding with Bourassa's freshly elected government.

It was the Quebec government, not the federal government, that, with the unanimous support of the leaders of the three opposition parties in the National Assembly at the time -including Camille Laurin, parliamentary leader of the Parti Quebecois -called on Oct. 15 for reinforcements from the Val Cartier Vandoos regiment of the Canadian Army to help the Quebec police authorities track those who had defied democracy by their crimes and calls to violence. At all times, the Canadian soldiers took orders and reported to the chief of the Surete du Quebec.

It was at Levesque's insistence that Laurin was forced to renege on his clear support a few hours later. Levesque would further humiliate Laurin when on Oct. 30, he would finally publicly declare in his Journal de Montreal daily column, that calling in the army was the "right decision." Soon thereafter, as correctly noted by Daniel Poliquin in his recent book, Rene Levesque (Boreal, 2009), Levesque repositioned yet again, now "accusing Trudeau of exaggerating the scale of the threat, and exploiting the hostage crisis to Ottawa's advantage. A clever counter-attack aimed at demonizing the federal government and allowing the separatist movement to shed responsibility, while also launching October revisionism, a much profitable industry to this day."

The implementation of the War Measures Act on Oct. 16 was not an all-out assault on civil rights and political liberty, but rather prohibited support for the violent acts of the FLQ. Freedom of expression, even to denounce the act, freedom of the press, and freedom of assembly were at all times preserved. For instance, student assemblies, including those that warmly applauded the announcement of Pierre Laporte's assassination, were not prohibited. Union and PQ leaders continued to meet and make public declarations throughout the period. The media were never impeded in their duties, quite the contrary, they sometimes exacerbated the crisis.

It is from these moments onward that the terrorists were subdued, the escalation of violence halted, and democracy restored.

As early as March 1971, all people unjustly incarcerated during the October Crisis (103 individuals of the total 497 apprehended) were afforded a right to an entirely independent process before the Quebec ombudsman, and received compensation up to $30,000 in 1971 dollars from the Quebec government.

Canadians -and foremost among them the citizens of the province of Quebec -overwhelmingly approved these actions at the time, without reserve, deeming them necessary to counter the insurgents and restore order.

HAPPY TREE GURU MCSWEENEY - CAN A THIEF LEAD YOU TO PARADISE ?

SHE IS BEAUTIFUL AND TALENTED - AND SHE IS A THIEF.  HAPPY TREE GURU DAWN MCSWEENEY ROBBED ME AND DESTROYED MY FAMILY.  CAN A THIEF LEAD YOU TO PARADISE ?

Dawn McSweeney a.k.a. The Desk Guru

*********************************

What goes on in the mind of a thief? For more than thirteen years- since I was attacked and robbed in my home - with the help of a Montreal Police officer - I have been focused on recovering everything Dawn McSweeney and her self-proclaimed "partners in crime" stole from me and from my family.

In my report entitled " THE TRAGEDY OF DAWN MCSWEENEY - HOW TO RAISE A CRIMINAL" - I describe in detail how Dawn was raised and how she behaved - her greed, her hatred, her jealousy and her malice. But I have not, until now, given any real thought to how she thinks.

How does a child become a thief who, without batting an eyelash, lies to her grandparents, steals their money and then robs her aunt - me - and then goes on to become a yoga guru, training strangers the ways of peace and contentment ? Does she have two separate brains that allow her to compartmentalize the thief in one part of her head while another part writes poetry praising her beloved grandmother ? I cannot fathom it.

My sister, Sheila, who tried time and again to help Dawn and Dawn's mother, our youngest sister, Debbie, can attest to Dawn's sneaky efforts to get money from her, but she wants to remain anonymous and will not allow me to even mention her name. The truth telling falls to me alone - until we finally get this case into criminal court. Then everyone will have to speak.

My mother based the last decade of her own life on the trust that Dawn McSweeney was a good Jewish child. (I being the betrayer of the faith.) She believed that Dawn was telling the truth and that she was devoted to her.

She did not believe that it was Dawn who had stolen her money. Years after that nightmare event, I learned that my mother had attacked me because she believed that I was the one who stole money she had hidden somewhere in the house.

Why believe that your first born child that you have always loved has become a thief and stolen your money?

Some time before my mother attacked me on October 7, 1996, in a casual conversation, my mother had commented that I was so enchanted by the Anglican Church that if I ever won the lottery, I would give the church all my money. She was deeply hurt by my conversion and she was constantly baiting me, asking me questions like, If Jesus was God, why did he say, "Why hast thou forsaken me?" to God when he was being crucified?

So we were having these heavy discussions all the time during those last months before my mother attacked me. Just heavy discussions. There were no arguments. I did not think these religious debates were about anything other than religion.

My mother would even listen in on my hour-long telephone conversations with a Christian friend. We could hear her heavy breathing on the line, but we said nothing. I just thought she was lonely and interested in our discussion. But there was something far worse going on. I just didn't know it.

Years later, in retrospect. I think my mother was listening to hear me say that I had taken her money. But, at the time, I didn't know there was money missing. I only learned about it by accident about four years after the fact.

Still, it was during the summer of 1996, that my mother's attitude toward me became strange. She would sit in her big armchair glaring at me, not saying anything, but glaring at me. I didn't know why, but it hurt. I could not have foreseen that this was a harbinger of a nightmare that would befall our family in a few short months.

I was aware that summer, that Dawn McSweeney was stirring up some kind of trouble. Since friends of mine from out of town had paid a very brief visit that summer, there was reason to believe Dawn was up to something. But what? I had no idea. But it was then that Dawn told my mother, in my presence that my friends who professed to love me, really hated me.

Dawn had invited the two teenagers outside - ostensibly for teen talk - while the adults sat in the living room chatting. When the family left, Dawn told my mother that the kids couldn't stand me. In fact, she said, they "despised" me. They only pretended to love me, "for fun".

Incidentally, we are still friends all these years later. The son, Robbie just got married this week.

It was after that visit that my mother's attitude toward me changed. My mother had pleaded me to "come home" two years earlier when she learned I was sick. After Dawn's intervention that summer, I no longer felt wanted. I started looking for a place of my own.

Unlike Dawn McSweeney, I have not been given the gift of a brain that can separate one part of me from another. I am completely aware of everything all the time. I am haunted by my imperfection, the way disease and age have ravaged my body, by the mistakes of my youth, my failure to be kind enough to others. My nights are filled with longing for those I have loved and lost. And, day and night, I think about the horrible damage Dawn McSweeney did to my parents and the rest of our family by her lies and her greed.

I have to fight the tears when I think of the years my mother and father lost with all their children and grandchildren because Dawn tore our family apart. She stole everything of value that we had and she turned us against each other. My parents went to their graves without knowing the truth. Those injuries can never be healed. How tragic and ironic that the only person my mother trusted was the thief who would destroy us.

When Dawn was young, she was afraid to go into the basement of her home in Pierrefonds because she said she heard ghosts there. Is she still haunted?

I have never had the gift of seeing or hearing the departed, but I wonder if my mother knows now what Dawn did to us and whether she visits Dawn at night. If the departed know the truth and they do visit, I pray my mother will finally persuade Dawn to return everything she stole and confess. Then, and only then will I stop telling the world about the crimes of Dawn McSweeney.

I have been pleading for the return of my belongings for thirteen years. I have been reporting Dawn's crimes to the police and members of government and the media for thirteen years. I am always available to take a polygraph test. If I am telling anything but the truth, why has Dawn McSweeney not sued me in all these years? And why did Dawn McSweeney and Alex Lavergne refuse to take a polygraph test as Montreal Police detectives told me ?

MARLENE JENNINGS, M.P. HAS DISAPPEARED

At the Meet the Candidates assembly in NDG on October 7, 2008, Liberal Member of Parliament, Marlene Jennings, stated before all the candidates and the public, "Mrs. Carter's rights were violated three times". She repeated the following at Rosedale United Church in Montreal shortly thereafter.

The three violations

1. In 1996, the Montreal Police refused to file a report of the initial robbery. They have continued to refuse to act ever since.

2. In 2007, immediately following the death of my mother, the same group of criminals obtained a court order accusing me of being insane and dangerous. I was released from hospital unconditionally as soon as the doctors found out what my accusers had done and why. After my mother's death, we learned that -

3. In 2005, the same group who call themselves "Partners in Crime" created a will in my mother's name when she was 92 years old and handicapped physically and mentally. My mother was kept in total isolation by these criminals for ten years - until her death. The sole beneficiaries of the 2005 will were the same people who robbed me and obtained the court order against me. Then it became clear why these criminals tried to discredit me and silence me.

Marlene Jennings was re-elected to Parliament on October 14, 2008. She began helping me with the case. But then .... she disappeared.

I have been very ill, but I did write to Marlene Jennings many times, appealing for her to proceed with the case against these criminals. I am unable to walk very well, but I can speak and write. I can participate in a court case.

I actually first asked Marlene Jennings for help immediately following the robbery. At the time, she said it was not in her jurisdiction, but in 2008, she did start to help. She filled out some papers, and she acknowledged publicly that my rights had been violated. For a while, I thought Marlene was the person who would finally bring me justice.

But when she was re-elected in 2008, Marlene Jennings sat at the right hand of Michael Ignatieff, and  - she just disappeared.

But I must continue fighting for justice, for myself, for my family, for thousands of other Canadian crime victims. I will not stop until Dawn McSweeney and those she boastfully calls her "partners in crime" on her own blog are tried in criminal court by an honest judge and they return everything they have stolen. Until then, I battle day and night - with or without Marlene Jennings.

Fighting for justice alone, day and night for thirteen years takes an awful lot of determination, time and energy. This agonizing fight has cost me dearly. It has cost me my health, endangered my life. But you must fight when you know your cause is just. There is no choice.

Even though I am also fighting for my life now, I continue my battle for justice against these criminals - and against a legal system that cares nothing for justice. I am
fighting the irresponsibility, incompetence, deception and corruption in Montreal, Quebec, Canada's injustice system..

INTELLIGENT PEOPLE ARE SPEAKING OUT

You say the public is quick to make decisions about politicians. I have been pleading for justice for more than thirteen years ! I have not been patient, but I have been polite, determine...
d and law-abiding in spite of everything I have suffered at the hands of the criminals - Dawn McSweeney and those she boastfully calls her "partners in crime" on her own blog - and the Montreal Police.

I have reason to be cynical about politicians. Marlene Jennings, MP twice stated at public meetings in 2008, that my rights had been violated three times. But the Montreal Police continue to ignore what Dawn McSweeney and her partners in crime have done to me and to my family. All my pleas to Members of Parliament, Members of the Quebec Legislature, ministers, and so-called "human rights" agencies are simply ignored. And, of course, the media are more interested in people who wear dead meat than they are in the suffering of the multitudes of crime victims.

Quick to decide? I don't think so. More intelligent members of society are just better informed and experienced. We see how incompetent, cold-hearted and even corrupt politicians and the police really are. And now we have ways of saying so for all the world to see.

DON'T KILL YOURSELF because some lame-brained bullies have nothing better to do than tease you. Bullies are twisted ! If they were not weak and inferior, they would not be trying to focus attention on someone else. If you are different that makes you an individual. God made you one of a kind. If you are dead, you cannot contribute anything more to those you love. You leave your family and friends with heartache and grief that will last all their lives. You will hurt them most of all.

Instead, report the bullies. Even if no one responds, keep on telling the truth again and again and again. I was attacked and robbed by my own family members. You cannot imagine the agony I have suffered day and night for years. I have bone cancer because I was so completely depleted, worn out by my suffering.

The Montreal Police have done nothing but help the thief, Dawn McSweeney and those she boastfully calls her "partners in crime" on her own blog. But I just keep reporting the crime again and again because, somewhere there is someone who will do something about this outrageous abuse. I LIVE to fight for justice and you should too. You can see my story at http://dawnmcsweeney.blogspot.com/. You can fight back too. Don't give up !

But what do you do about the criminals who have already injured the innocent, Mr. Ignatieff ? Kiss them on all their cheeks and tell them to go back to school? What are you going to do with the criminals who robbed my family with the help of a Montreal Police officer? You don't answer. But I will keep telling the world.

Why on earth should any crime victim support you, Mr. Ignatieff? You live in a lofty tower that ignores our suffering. All the tea parties, whistle stops, and sport shirt events won't change that reality.

BILL SHATNER: How we adored Kirk ! We were dedicated Star Trek fans. Great admirers of the brilliance of Gene Roddenberry. We followed the Star Trek Conventions, bought the books and pins, even had the pleasure and honour of meeting him at a summer theatre in Falmouth, Cape Cod. On that occasion, he was a delightful gentleman who posed for pictures with us even though he was really sick with a cold. We had stars in our eyes about the whole Star Trek mythology - even when Bill himself seemed to scoff at it - and at us. But Bill Shatner has fallen from grace. His recent efforts are an embarrassment and a betrayal of the idealism Star Trek instilled in a couple of generations.
