David Crombie, Toronto's 'Tiny, perfect mayor,' still making a mark on civic life | Toronto Star

It's been decades since David Crombie served as mayor of Toronto, but he remains quietly ubiquitous in the hallways of civic life.

Interesting to see a picture of David Crombie. It was around Christmas time, 1982 - can't access my files right now - when my husband, Cliff Carter and I were invited by author Mairuth Sarsfield to perform in Parliament for Harambee in the Parliamentary lounge during their Black Orpheus Ball.
In conjunction wit
h that honour, we were invited to dinner at the home of the Ambassador from Kenya in Ottawa. He was not only the Ambassador, he was also a high ranking officer - a general, if I recall correctly.
We learned that we were taking the place at the table that was originally intended for David Crombie and his wife. But David Crombie was out of the country at the time, I believe, and so Cliff and I had the pleasure and the honour of taking their places at the table. It was a small dinner party - perhaps a dozen guests - so this was a very special occasion.
