Japan issues 'heartfelt apology' to former Canadian prisoners of war

The government of Japan has issued a "heartfelt apology" to former Canadian prisoners for their suffering during the Second World War.

Every time I hear something like this, I wonder about what people are thinking when they apologize for the actions of their ancestors. What nonsense. We are each responsible for what we do or do not do. We are not responsible for what our relatives or ancestors or anyone else has done. These official apologies look nice on documents, but they are ridiculous and meaningless and useless. What nations can do is change so that the present and the future are different, better. That's what matters. No one can erase what the Nazis did. No one can erase what the Japanese did. No one can erase what the politicians and armies of other nations have done. But where is the change?
THERE CAN BE NO PEACE WITHOUT JUSTICE
