The event recorder from the wreckage of a fatal Via Rail train derailment west of Toronto was recovered Monday morning, offering investigators hope of finding out what caused the accident that killed three Via engineers.

The Transportation Safety Board said Monday that the Toronto-bound train was travelling from the Niagara region and switching tracks when it derailed near Burlington, Ont., at about 3:30 p.m. on Sunday.

The three engineers who died were riding in the cab of the locomotive, which toppled onto its side and slid into a building at the side of the tracks.

"[The crash] destroyed the locomotive cab with the three of them in it," lead TSB investigator Tom Griffith said Monday.

In all, 45 people were admitted to hospitals to be treated for injuries ranging from minor to a broken leg, a back injury and a heart attack, Via officials said. As of Monday evening, eight passengers remained in hospital.

Griffith told a news conference the train's event recorder appeared at first to have been damaged, but investigators now expect to recover useful information. The orange-coloured device, sometimes called a black box, can record information such as the train's speed, whether the brakes were applied and at what force and whether the whistle was blowing, he said.

"It tells us everything that crew was doing inside that locomotive," he said. "The only thing it does not tell us is the voice. There's no voice recording on the locomotive. There is in air [crashes], but not on rail."

Griffith said the speed limit on that stretch of track is "80 miles an hour" [129 km/h], but slower when a train is crossing from one track to another, as this train was.

He said the crew members were at the front of the train. "As to who was on the controls, right now we're still investigating that."

The three Via employees who were killed were identified Monday morning as:

Ken Simmonds, 56, of Toronto.
Peter Snarr, 52, of Toronto.
Patrick Robinson, 40, of Cornwall, Ont.

Both Simmonds and Snarr had more than 30 years of service as locomotive engineers with CN and Via, the passenger-rail company said in a statement. It described Robinson as a new Via employee, who was on board as an observer as part of his familiarization program.

Griffith said it's possible Robinson was at the controls at the time of the crash, but said he would have only been allowed to operate the locomotive "under strict supervision from the other two locomotive engineers."

A fourth Via employee was injured.

Via Rail began cleanup operations early Monday at the scene near Plains and King roads in Burlington.

The Transportation Safety Board is also beginning what's expected to be a year-long investigation. If any urgent safety issues are identified, they will be made public before the final report.

The derailment involved five cars as well as the locomotive.

Via president and CEO Marc Laliberté extended his condolences on behalf of the company on Monday afternoon.

Laliberté also thanked those who were involved in the rescue effort.

Among the dozens of passengers injured, three were airlifted to hospitals in Hamilton, one with a heart attack, another with a broken leg and the third with a back injury. The other passengers suffered less serious injuries and were either treated at the scene or sent to local hospitals.

An official with Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital in Burlington said the hospital had seen 20 people from the accident, with injuries ranging from minor to serious. Patients were also taken to the Credit Valley Hospital and Trillium Health Centre in Mississauga.

The train's manifest listed 75 passengers, but emergency officials said they couldn't confirm whether it was accurate.

Late Monday, Halton Regional Police issued an appeal "to any outstanding passengers" who were on the train that derailed, but have yet to make contact to police.

Police say they do not know the current whereabouts of about a dozen passengers who left the scene using private transportation.

Safety questions

Emile Therien, a railway safety watchdog with the non-profit Canada Safety Council, told CBC News he was not surprised at news of the deadly derailment.

Since 1999, he told CBC News, the federal government has allowed the railway industry to develop its own safety standards while cutting back on spot inspections. There were almost 1,100 accidents involving trains in 2010, more than half of them derailments.

"This awful thing in Burlington should be a wake-up call," he said. "I think Canadians would be shocked to realize how little involvement the federal government has in railway safety."

Federal Transport Minister Denis Lebel declined to be interviewed by CBC News about Sunday's derailment.

However, he issued a statement saying "the department will verify that the company continues to comply with all aspects of the Transport Safety Act."

Deadly Canadian train accidents

2006: A CN train derailment occurred near Lillooet, B.C., in which the train slid more than 200 metres down a mountain. Two employees were killed. An inadequate braking system was at fault.

1999: A Via train carrying 186 passengers derailed in Thamesville, Ont. It collided with stationary railcars on an adjacent track. Two crew members in the locomotive were fatally injured.

1986: A speeding CN freight train slammed into a Via train as it headed eastward from Hinton to Edmonton, killing 23 people and injuring 71 others. Human error was to blame.

WHY SHOULD YOU FEEL DISCOURAGED ?

There is a wonderful song that Ethel Waters made famous. I used to sing it with my husband, Cliff Carter, and it was hard to get through it without tears.

Why should I feel discouraged?

Why should the shadows come?

Why should my heart feel weary,

And long for heaven and home ?

His Eye is on the Sparrow,

And I know, He watches me ...

As I read the many posts by grieving crime victims on Facebook, I see your anger, your pain, your frustration.

Western law is the law. It serves the purposes of lawyers. But there is little justice to be found. Crime victims are treated as pests, inconveniences, mere gnats distracting from the goals of those who hold power and reign - yes, rain - over our lives ... politicians, police, lawyers, judges. There is no one to help us if we are not rich. I see your despair and I know it in my own gut. And that is when I sing the song.

When Cliff was playing at The Abacus on the West Island in Montreal, I used to come to the club in the evening and join him at the baby grand and sing love songs with him.

Late one evening, I arrived to find two gentleman sitting at the piano. Cliff introduced them to me. One was a judge. The other a government tax lawyer. And they were waiting for me. Why?

Cliff always chatted with the customers. He was a very pleasant and interesting man. He had told them he was married to me. They decided to stay and wait for me.

These two gentlemen wanted to know what had happened to me. They told me that through the years, they had read my Letters to the Editors of The Gazette and The Montreal Star and then, my letters stopped. They wondered what had happened to me and why I had stopped writing.

Hundreds of my Letters to the Editors had been published over decades. And, yes, I had stopped writing letters to the newspapers in the 1970's.

I told these gentlemen that I had come to believe it was futile. Through the years, the same injustices continued and I kept writing and nothing changed.

Once I was living with Cliff, I turned away from the fray and gave my heart to love and music. It was pointless to write any more Letters to the Editors. No one was paying any attention.

It was then that these gentlemen opened my eyes. One of them asked me, " Do you know who reads your letters?"

I said that I assumed a lot of people did, but it didn't have any effect.

Then he told me, "Your letters are read by lawyers, judges, politicians, people in positions of power in Montreal, in Quebec and beyond. People in Miami were reading your letters. You have to start writing again.

And so I did. But then the Internet entered my life and I discovered the precious gift of THE BLOG. It was the answer to my wildest dreams - I can write day and night and not worry about correcting text or the opinions and powers of editors. The world can read what I have to say in an instant. At this writing, more than 45,000 people have read my blogs.

So I say to you, my fellow victims, even if no one answers, Keep writing ! Keep telling your story ! Keep reporting the facts ! Don't give up. You never know who may read what you have to say. Just tell the truth again and again and again ...

Write without ceasing.

A former MP, retired judges and the former federal ombudsman for victims of crime were on Parliament Hill Thursday to list off a number of complaints about the government's omnibus crime bill.

They are part of a group called the Smart Justice Network that is trying to promote discussion in Canada about "safe and effective" responses to crime.

"I think fear is at the basis of much of the government's work here. And what it's going to do, unfortunately, is make Canadians, I think, more fearful and less safe," said David Daubney, a former Progressive Conservative MP in the 1980s.

Retired judges, the former federal ombudsman for victims, and other justice advocates were on Parliament Hill to criticize the government's omnibus crime bill, now under examination in the Senate.

Phyllis Carter I am a crime victim. I have not read the Omnibus Bill. Legalese is not something the average person can cope with. All I want is justice.

I was attacked and robbed in my home in NDG in Montreal. I managed to call 911, hoping the police would come and rescue me.

Instead, the police helped the thief.

The police forbid me to take any of my belongings from my home. The officer took me out of my home by my arm and left me abandoned in the street. There was no legal procedure, no justification. I was a 60 year old widow suffering from cancer. I was not a threat to anyone.

Everything of value that I had worked for all my life was left in the house under the complete control of the thief, Dawn McSweeney and those she calls her "partners in crime" on her own blog.

I care about justice. Everyone says these crimes are not in their jurisdiction.

How many other crime victims are doubly victimized by the police and then victimized again by being abandoned by those who are paid to uphold the law?

Oh, yes. Canada has a lot of laws. They serve the needs of lawyers. But who serves the needs of crime victims ? Anyone ?

DEATH IN DOLLARD DES ORMEAUX, QUEBEC - WHO IS RESPONSIBLE ?

Someone's grandparents walk along the side of the street. It is a lovely community, a good neighbourhood, a mild evening before the anticipated Spring. People there are pleasant to each other. It is a safe place to walk.

But is it? There are no sidewalks. The Town of Dollard des Ormeaux provides for cars, neighbourhood traffic. You can drive home after work and park in your driveway or garage. Dollard is a good place to live.

But Dollard des Ormeaux is also a good place to die, to be killed by a driver operating a vehicle recklessly while under the influence. And the elderly couple forced to walk at the curb in the snow and ice and slush because there are no sidewalks - well they are just sitting ducks.

Who is responsible ?

It wasn't war or pollution or gangsters or disease that brought such tragedy to this couple, this family, this neighbourhood.

It was the Town of Dollard des Ormeaux's administration that puts dollars before safety.

It was the 40 year old man going to court today accused of causing the death of one person and injury to another while driving under the influence of drugs.

We were pioneers of the Town of Dollard des Ormeaux, when Fred Wilson was mayor. I was an active member of the community when Gerry Dephoure was mayor.

I wrote the "Original History of Dollard des Ormeaux, Quebec, 1689 - 1969" (copyright ) which was published by limited permission to Ross Greer in The North Shore News, and again in the early 1980's with limited permission to Jeanette Burley Tremblay in The Lakeshore News and Chronicle. My history was used at Sunnydale Elementary School.

I know Dollard des Ormeaux the way a mother knows her child. I know that Dollard is a lovely community of lovely people who are welcoming to people from other places.

But politicians are always about money first - so no sidewalks.

In the beginning there was no stop sign on the street that led to the small circle with the little park in the centre. I asked the mayor and council for a STOP sign.

I was refused. Drivers coming home from work would be annoyed at having to stop before turning into the circle. No stop sign.

Then the toddler who lived at the corner tried to cross the few steps to the park. And he was struck by a car that didn't have to stop.

The little boy lived.

I went to see him in his crib at the Lakeshore General Hospital. He looked like a casualty of war with his bandaged little head. But he lived.

And then Councillor Frank Quinn took my appeal to the Mayor again.

Before the sun set on that same day, public works had installed the stop sign at the corner of Maple Circle.

How much blood has to be spilled before politicians take responsibility ?

Will the court add to the tragedy by failing to impose a severe sentence against the driver that just tore apart the lives of this innocent couple?

A 40-year-old man is facing impaired driving charges after his eastbound car allegedly struck the two pedestrians in Dollard des Ormeaux as they were walking on Ceres St. near Andras St., Montreal police said.

MONTREAL - A neighbour of a couple in their 70s who were hit by a car in Dollard des Ormeaux Tuesday – one fatally - says the street has no sidewalks and is poorly maintained, so people have to walk in the street.

Henri Parlenge told The Gazette the couple hit by an allegedly impaired driver's car Tuesday about 8 p.m. were "nice, quite calm" and they ran a Chinese restaurant somewhere in Montreal. They have a grown son and grandchildren, he said. The couple lived on the street for at least 15 years, he added.

"It's terribly sad," Parlenge, 69, said about the couple. "They were pleasant and smiled at us from their garden but we didn't speak the same language," he said, noting that the couple was from Asia.

The woman and the man, 72, were rushed to a hospital in critical condition but the woman died of her injuries during the night, Lacoursière said. The man was in serious but stable condition Wednesday morning.

Parlenge said the city of D.D.O. should take the accident as a sign that things need to be improved. "They should have a sidewalk on at least one side of the street and they should clear it properly so people can walk there," he added. There are not many street lights so the visibility is not great at night, he added.

In addition, the Sunnybrooke train station is nearby and people who use it park on the street, causing additional and unnecessary traffic, Parlenge said. "We have children playing in the street. We are afraid because when the cars come by – and some go fast – we have to quickly get out of the way."

The 40-year-old driver was given a test for his blood-alcohol level and for drugs and medications. He was found to be under the influence of drugs or medications to the point where it was not safe for him to drive his vehicle, Lacoursière said.

The man's blood-alcohol level was not, however, above the legal limit.

The suspect is expected to be arraigned Wednesday at the Montreal courthouse on a charge of impaired driving causing injury and impaired driving causing death, Lacoursière said.

As a Jewish Christian, I find this practice by the Mormons appalling. During World War II and at other times in history, Jews were forced to convert by Roman Catholics and others or suffer torture and death. Jesus would have a fit. To follow Jesus by choice is a matter of conscience. To be forced or tricked into baptism is an outrageous sin. To be baptized after death is one of the most insulting and idiotic practices fanatics could dream up. It makes a mockery of religion - but there is an awful lot of that going on in the world today, isn't there.

Mormon Baptism Targets Anne Frank -- Again

Anne Frank, the Jewish girl whose diary and death in a Nazi concentration camp made her a symbol of the Holocaust, was allegedly baptized posthumously Saturday by a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, according to whistleblower Helen Radkey, a former member of the church.

The ritual was conducted in a Mormon temple in the Dominican Republic, according to Radkey, a Salt Lake City researcher who investigates such incidents, which violate a 2010 pact between the Mormon Church and Jewish leaders.

Radkey said she discovered that Annelies Marie "Anne" Frank, who died at Bergen Belsen death camp in 1945 at age 15, was baptized by proxy on Saturday. Mormons have submitted versions of her name at least a dozen times for proxy rites and carried out the ritual at least nine times from 1989 to 1999, according to Radkey. But Radkey says this is the first time in more than a decade that Frank's name has been discovered in a database that can be used both for genealogy and also to submit a deceased person's name to be considered for proxy baptism -- a separate process, according to a spokesman for the church. The database is only open to Mormons.

A screen shot of the database sent by Radkey shows a page for Frank stating "completed" next to categories labeled "Baptism" and "Confirmation," with the date Feb. 18, 2012, and the name of the Santo Domingo Dominican Republic Temple.

As The Huffington Post has reported, Mormon posthumous proxy baptism has continued, despite church vows to stop.

Negotiations between Mormon and Jewish leaders led to a 1995 agreement for the church to stop the posthumous baptism of all Jews, except in the case of direct ancestors of Mormons, but Radkey says she found that some Mormons had failed to adhere to the agreement.

The name of Nobel Peace Prize winner Elie Wiesel was recently submitted to the restricted genealogy website as "ready" for posthumous proxy baptism, though the church says the rite is reserved for the deceased, and Wiesel is alive. Wiesel, a Holocaust survivor, was among a group of Jewish leaders who campaigned against the practice and prompted the 2010 pact by which the Mormon Church promises to at least prevent proxy baptism requests for Holocaust victims.

Wiesel last week called on Republican presidential candidate and Mormon Mitt Romney, a former Mormon bishop who has donated millions to the church, to speak out about the practice.

The Romney campaign has previously refused to comment and referred The Huffington Post to the LDS church. HuffPost emailed a church spokesman for comment Tuesday, but did not immediately receive a reply.

Radkey's discovery of another possible proxy baptism for Frank follows an apology from the Mormon Church last week for recent posthumous baptisms of Nazi hunter Simon Wiesenthal's parents.

Radkey noted that the latest baptism of Frank by proxy is especially egregious, because she was an unmarried teenager who left no descendants. Mormon officials have stressed that church members are only supposed to submit the names of their ancestors, in accordance withe the agreements.

"The security of the names submissions process for posthumous rites must be questioned, in view of the rash of prominent Jewish Holocaust names that have recently appeared on Mormon temple rolls," Radkey said about her latest find. "This one sailed straight through, with Anne's correct name in their 'secure' database."

Radkey said she expects once word gets out that church officials will scrub the records as they did with Wiesel and Weisenthal's parents.

The Mormon Church responded later Tuesday in a statement by spokesman Michael Purdy, sent to The Huffington Post: "The Church keeps its word and is absolutely firm in its commitment to not accept the names of Holocaust victims for proxy baptism."

"While no system is foolproof in preventing the handful of individuals who are determined to falsify submissions we are committed to taking action against individual abusers," the statement says, "It is distressing when an individual willfully violates the Church's policy and something that should be understood to be an offering based on love and respect becomes a source of contention.

I have been pleading for justice day and night for fifteen years since I was attacked and robbed in my home. While I was being attacked, I managed to call 911. The Montreal Police I hoped would rescue me - helped the thief instead.

Marlene Jennings stated at two public meetings "Mrs. Carter's rights were violated three times." But the Montreal Police and members of governments at all levels tell me that only criminals have rights in Quebec and crime victims have to hire a lawyer.

These criminals stole everything my father and I worked for all our lives. But everyone in authority tells me that these crimes are in nobody's jurisdiction.

WELLESLEY, Mass. (AP) — "I love your verses with all my heart, dear Miss Barrett ..."

So begins the first love letter to 19th century poet Elizabeth Barrett from her future husband, fellow poet Robert Browning.

Their 573 love letters, which capture their courtship, their blossoming love and their forbidden marriage, have long fascinated scholars and poetry fans. Though transcriptions of their correspondence have been published in the past, the handwritten letters could only be seen at Wellesley College, where the collection has been kept since 1930.

But starting Tuesday, Valentine's Day, their famous love letters will become available online where readers can see them — just as they were written — with creased paper, fading ink, quill pen cross outs, and even the envelopes the two poets used.

The digitization project is a collaboration between Wellesley and Baylor University in Waco, Texas, which houses the world's largest collection of books, letters and other items related to the Brownings.

Wellesley administrators hope the project will expose students, romantics, poetry fans and others to their love story.

Barrett, one of the most well-known poets of the Victorian era, suffered from chronic illness and was in her late 30s when Browning first wrote her in 1845 to tell her he admired her work.

In their fifth month of corresponding, they met for the first time, introduced by Barrett's cousin.

After more than a year of almost daily letters between them, the couple married in secret in September 1846, defying her father's prohibition against her ever marrying. They fled from London to Italy, where doctors had told Barrett her health might improve. Her father disinherited her and never spoke to her again.

"It's the fact that she defied her father, she was in ill health, they fell in love through letters, she left with hardly anything," said Ruth Rogers, Wellesley's curator of special collections.

"If you want a perfect romance, just read the letters," she said.

The website set up for readers to see the correspondence includes both the handwritten letters and transcriptions, as well as a zoom function for readers to try to decipher faded or illegible words. The body of letters will also be searchable by keywords.

Readers can see for themselves how they fall in love, while corresponding about other writers, philosophy and their own work. Barrett first wrote the lines of what would become her most famous poem after she met Browning, "How Do I Love Thee? Let me count the ways."

Consider this, from Barrett's letter to Browning on June 4, 1846: "You are too perfect, too overcomingly good & tender — dearest you are, & I have no words with which to answer you."

Or this, from Browning to Barrett, Sept. 18, 1846, shortly before their marriage: "God bless and strengthen you, my ever dearest dearest ... Write to me one word more — depend on me ... "

"She met someone who she could share a seriously important part of her life with," said Sandra Donaldson, an English professor at the University of North Dakota and a recognized scholar of Elizabeth Barrett Browning.

"Seeing these things that they touched — even though we are seeing it on the screen — has much the same effect as being able to see and touch the manuscripts," she said.

"When you look at the transcriptions, it's cold, black and white. It's nothing like these letters," she said of the handwritten online manuscripts.

Rogers said one of the most interesting things about the love letters is that Barrett almost left them behind when she and Browning left for Italy.

In her last letter to Browning, dated Sept. 18, 1846, she says she had to take them with her.

"I tried to leave them, & I could not — That is, they would not be left: it was not my fault — I will not be scolded," she wrote.

Henry Durant, who founded Wellesley College in 1870, admired the Brownings and considered Elizabeth Barrett Browning to be an example of a strong, educated woman who would be a good role model for the young women of Wellesley. Durant gave his large personal library to the college, including many first editions by both poets.

Because the college was already known for its Browning room and collection, Robert Browning donated Elizabeth's handwritten poem, "Little Mattie" to the college in 1882.

Former Wellesley President Caroline Hazard purchased the collection of Browning letters, and in 1930, donated them to Wellesley, where they have remained.

The library even has the actual mahogany door to the Barrett house in London, where Browning's letters to Elizabeth passed through a brass letter slot. The slot was screwed shut by a Wellesley librarian more than 40 years ago because students slipped through letters of their own to pay homage to the Brownings. Rogers said she is considering re-opening the slot.

The digitized letters will be made available free online through Baylor's digital collections.

Baylor transformed 1,723 raw digital images from Wellesley into more than 4,200 edited page and envelope images, said Darryl Stuhr, manager of digitization projects for Baylor's electronic library. Baylor also digitized more than 800 other letters written by or to the couple by friends, family and other literary greats of the era.

Stuhr said Baylor needed 107 gigabytes for the love letters alone.

"It is giving worldwide access to the collection, where somebody can actually see what the letters look like without having to travel, from the comfort of their own homes," Stuhr said.

Has the revolution betrayed the women of Egypt?

Hoda Ghaneya, the new Muslim Brotherhood MP for the district of Al-Qalyubiya in the Egyptian Delta, is being mobbed like a pop star.

"Well done, Hoda. We know you'll look after us," says a woman passing with her shopping.

"Hey look this way," yells the driver of a rickshaw, sounding his horn. "Let me give you a nice joint of meat," calls the butcher.

I am on a constituency walkabout with the MP and the scene unfolding in front of us is one I never thought I would see in Egypt, because Hoda Ghaneya is a woman.

Egypt is a country where only men are accepted as natural born leaders. At the height of the Tahrir Square drama when women bravely defied the national stereotype and joined the demonstrations, some men yelled at them "Go back home and feed your babies!"

But Mrs Ghaneya, a doctor and mother of four, is accepted and acclaimed.

How come you voted for a woman? I ask the butcher. "She has ability and skills and I hope she will work to make us happier and make this country better," he answers.

The noise and the commotion is too much for a sensible conversation so Mrs Ghaneya takes me to her home, a modest house in a street just off the main shopping street.

"You see," her cousin says to me as we walk, "she actually lives here. The MP who Mubarak sent to represent us only came to visit us twice a year."

'Virginity tests'

Others told me how the Muslim Brotherhood looked after them during Hosni Mubarak's 30 years as Egypt's leader. They built hospitals, orphanages and even gave food parcels to the poor - no wonder the party swept parliament in the recent elections.

But the Muslim Brotherhood also has a reputation for wanting to keep women at home and for requiring them to wear headscarves.

To ask Mrs Ghaneya about making headscarves compulsory appears irrelevant in the Egyptian Delta. Everyone is wearing one. She herself wears a voluminous blue garment that covers everything except her face and hands.

But will she champion women's rights? "People now have equal rights regardless of their colour, sex, race or religion," she replies. "There will be complete rights for all citizens and we will all feel the existence of these rights in the coming period. This is why people voted for us and this is what we promise to deliver, God willing. Inshallah!"

She speaks with such genuine sincerity that you want to believe her. But many women in Egypt today are worried.

I meet Samira Ibrahim as she leaves the Military Court on the outskirts of Cairo. It was the fifth time she had taken the eight hour bus journey from her home in Upper Egypt to attend a hearing of the case which she has initiated.

She is taking the army officer to court who subjected her to a "virginity test" in March 2011 after she was apprehended for joining the protests in Tahrir Square.

"Every time I go to court they humiliate me" she says as she leaves the courtroom in tears. "But I won't let them beat me. I'll keep going for as long as it takes until I get justice."

No-go zone

In the car we share back to the centre of town she tells me her story.

She was among a group of women arrested on March 9 2011 and taken to a military prison, beaten and tortured. She says that some of the women died. Those who survived were given a virginity test by a woman military doctor in front of a group of laughing, clapping soldiers.

When the ordeal was over the male military officer in charge made her strip again and carried out a similar assault himself. Samira says she felt "utterly defeated".

What message were they trying to give you, I ask? "It was quite simple", Samira replies. "If you take to the streets in the name of the revolution or call for freedom or social justice, we will violate your honour."

It appears that the message has got through. When I visited Tahrir Square, there were very few women there.

Samira is the only one of some 20 women involved in the incident who has taken the matter to court. None of the other women has returned to the square.

Female quota

Ironically being an Egyptian woman involved in politics was in many ways easier under the old regime.

The former president's wife, Susanne Mubarak, is now reviled, but she was a champion of women's rights.

She pushed for reform in the divorce and family laws which were heavily weighted in the man's favour. These reforms are now known as "Susanne's Law" and the fear is that, because it is associated with the old regime, women might lose their recent legal gains.

And while Hoda Ghaneya's party hold a majority in the new parliament, she is a part of a very small minority. There are only nine women MPs in the new parliament, seven elected and two appointed, out of some 508 seats.

Under Hosni Mubarak, there was a quota of 64 women MPs, 12% of the old parliament. But that positive discrimination initiative was also promoted by Susanne Mubarak and has been scrapped.

Mrs Mubarak did not dare meddle with the presidency and under the old laws a woman could not be president.

Now that the constitution which banned women has been suspended, Bothaina Kamel has snuck in her bid as Egypt's first female presidential candidate.

Ms Kamel could not be a greater contrast to Mrs Ghaneya. The former TV presenter is elegantly clad in a knee-length, figure hugging dress and has a lot of exposed red hair.

She is also in a huge hurry. I sit in the back seat of her car as she dashes from a visit to Tahrir Square, via a debate on the future of Egypt's judicial system at Cairo University, to a meeting with political allies on drawing up the next Egyptian constitution.

She emphasises the word next. "A committee for constitutional reforms has been created without the participation of a single woman," she says, adding, "I fear the worst for women's rights".

Tourism collapse

As she fields two iPhones at once in the front of the car, she explains that she is encouraging other women to participate in politics by standing in the presidential elections, which are due to be held later in the year.

A non-headscarf wearing woman does not stand a chance. And I challenge her on whether last year's parliamentary election results suggest that Egyptian women simply do not vote for women.

"The problem is that 30% of women are illiterate in Egypt today," she explains. "They did not understand the process and many were told who to vote for. Besides, all the political alliances have an Islamic bias which is detrimental to the status of women."

In the rural areas, women appear content to be represented by the Muslim Brotherhood. The Egyptian economy is in a dire state.

Tourism has slumped, local authorities cannot pay for rubbish collection and the country is in a mess, literally. Dumps of garbage are left along the sides of the roads and, in one Cairo suburb, piled up into 10 metre (32 feet) high mountains of filth.

If the new MPs can introduce a semblance of order to the country, the majority of people will be happy, regardless of the sex of their elected representatives.

'Parallel parliament'

In Egypt's second city, Alexandria, a sophisticated city of elegant 19th Century Italianate mansions with a stylish corniche, women do worry about their status in post revolutionary Egypt.

The reason why women and female revolutionaries were not elected and were even punished for their stand is because the revolution has not run its full course yet. The revolution is still ongoing

Aida Noureldin, a lawyer and human rights activist, is doing something about it. She invites me to the first meeting of a working party she has called together to form an alternative parliament. She calls it the "Parallel Parliament".

"Women were just used as voting blocs in these last elections and we do not have any women MPs from Alexandria in the new parliament and so we decided to create a parallel parliament which will be made up of a majority of women with a few men and young people.

"We'll share the responsibility of decision making with the official parliament and we'll monitor what goes on there," she says.

At the meeting it was a lady in full niqab who dared ask the obvious: "Who is going to listen to us?" She has a point.

Ms Noureldin looks flustered and replies that at least it will be good practice for the future. "We shall be in a better position to fight the elections next time round," she says.

"Next time", "It will take time" and "Inshallah" were words I heard a lot from the women of Egypt.

So many had hope vested in the revolution, but they are prepared to wait. Even Samira Ibrahim who was brutally beaten, tortured and sexually abused after she was dragged from Tahrir Square by soldiers says the battle is not lost.

"The reason why women and female revolutionaries were not elected and were even punished for their stand," she says "is because the revolution has not run its full course yet. The revolution is still ongoing."

I got sent this story tip via email and didn't believe it until I viewed the video but here is the jaw-dropper of the .. well you decide.

Egyptian lawyer Nagla al Imam has devised a novel way of fighting Israel: Arab men should sexually molest Jewish women to protest the occupation, according to her proposal. In the TV report, Al-Imam explains that since there are no laws against sexual harassment in Arab countries, this would not entail any legal consequences.

She points out that if it is permitted to do it to Arab women, then it is certainly permitted to do it to Israeli girls.

"Leave Arab lands or be raped," in her words.

In this video provided by MEMRI (Middle East Media Research Institute), the Al-Arabiya News Channel informs the Arab World that an Egyptian lawyer believes that young Arab men should sexually harass Israeli woman at any time, in any place, using any means possible as a form of resistance against Israel.

RECOVERY VILLAGE WOULD SAVE LIVES, CHILDREN, MONEY AND OUR SELF RESPECT

When the Montreal Forum closed in 1996, The Montreal Gazette published my Letter to the Editor in which I encouraged the City of Montreal to convert the Forum building into a Recovery Centre for the many street people who waste their lives lying on park benches and in alleys in all kinds of weather - dirty, drunk, smoking, drugged, annoying passersby and throwing away their lives.

In my letter, I proposed that the Forum Centre provide basic accommodations including clean cots, showers, simple healthy meals, basic medical and psychological care and triage, counsellors to evaluate the guests, information, guidance and referrals to reasonable housing, health care services, adult education, and retraining programs for jobs.

My plan was ignored.

So, all these decades later, nothing has changed. The streets of Montreal are still littered with stinking, wasting lives.

Again, I propose a Recovery Village.

If we can have huge shopping malls full of extravagant clothing and electronic gadgets and killer foods for the well-to-do, why can't we create a centre to save lives, protect tourism, save money, save the police from wasting time, energy and even their lives chasing after drug addicts and violent offenders, protect children from perverts and drug dealers, fill jobs, cut welfare benefits, cut health costs due to violence. There are probably more benefits that would accrue from taking the derelicts off the street, triaging to place each individual in his or her appropriate place, and making people who can be helped productive again.

Years ago, when the MacDonalds closed at the corner of Walkley and Cote St. Luc in NDG, the local newspaper, The Monitor, published my Letter to the Editor in which I suggested that the restaurant building be converted to a much-needed community centre. The letter was published but there was silence.

Just a few short months later, the mayor of Montreal created a big PR show by turning the MacDonalds into a community centre. As the cameras flashed at him in front of the MacDonalds building, I handed him a copy of my Letter to the Editor which he quickly pocketed.

I know what I am talking about. I have been widowed, seriously ill, unemployed, a crime victim, homeless and destitute. Here is a piece I wrote during one of my darkest times:

Here, after midnight,

Strangers keep coughing in the dark;

I hear syncopated snoring in the dark;

A peculiar girl is laughing in her sleep;

An old man with a shaggy beard weeps.

A strapping fellow with solid biceps

And wild eyes

Mills about in his undershirt,

Cursing much and mightily

At no one in particular.

A distraught spinster leaps from her cot,

Quoting scripture and raving -

"The Lord will see you all in Hell for this !"

And here am I,

In the midst of this congregation

Of derelicts, alcoholics and drug addicts.

I feel separate - out of place - disassociated,

And small,

Wrapped in a blanket,

I wrote this piece in May, 1993. I asked, "Where is the dawn?"

I could not have foreseen that, on October 7, 1996, widowed and sick with cancer, I would be robbed of everything I worked for all my life by Dawn McSweeney and see my family and my health destroyed with the help of the Montreal Police.

I called this piece Shelter Three because it was the third shelter I had stayed in while struggling to find work. This was one year after my darling husband died and just weeks before I fell ill with cancer.

For those unfamiliar with these awards, they are named after 81-year-old Stella Liebeck who spilled hot coffee on herself and successfully sued the McDonald's in New Mexico, where she purchased coffee. You remember, she took the lid off the coffee and put it between her knees while she was driving. Who would ever think one could get burned doing that, right? Kathleen Robertson of Austin, Texas was awarded $80,000 by a jury of her peers after breaking her ankle tripping over a toddler who was running inside a furniture store. The store owners were understandably surprised by the verdict, considering the running toddler was her own son.

* SIXTH PLACE *

Carl Truman, 19, of Los Angeles, California won $74,000 plus medical expenses when his neighbor ran over his hand with a Honda Accord. Truman apparently didn't notice there was someone at the wheel of the car when he was trying to steal his neighbor's hubcaps.

* FIFTH PLACE *

Terrence Dickson, of Bristol, Pennsylvania, who was leaving a house he had just burglarized by way of the garage. Unfortunately for Dickson, the automatic garage door opener malfunctioned and he could not get the garage door to open. Worse, he couldn't re-enter the house because the door connecting the garage to the house locked when Dickson pulled it shut. Forced to sit for eight, count 'em, EIGHT days and survive on a case of Pepsi and a large bag of dry dog food, he sued the homeowner's insurance company claiming undue mental Anguish. Amazingly, the jury said the insurance company must pay Dickson $500,000 for his anguish. We should all have this kind of anguish Keep scratching. There are more...

Jerry Williams, of Little Rock, Arkansas, garnered 4th Place in the Stella's when he was awarded $14,500 plus medical expenses after being bitten on the butt by his next door neighbor's beagle - even though the beagle was on a chain in its owner's fenced yard. Williams did not get as much as he asked for because the jury believed the beagle might have been provoked at the time of the butt bite because Williams had climbed over the fence into the yard and repeatedly shot the dog with a pellet gun.

Pick a new spot to scratch, you're getting a bald spot..

* THIRD PLACE *

Amber Carson of Lancaster, Pennsylvania because a jury ordered a Philadelphia restaurant to pay her $113,500 after she slipped on a spilled soft drink and broke her tailbone. The reason the soft drink was on the floor: Ms. Carson had thrown it at her boyfriend 30 seconds earlier during an argument. What ever happened to people being responsible for their own actions?

Only two more so ease up on the scratching...

Kara Walton, of Claymont, Delaware sued the owner of a night club in a nearby city because she fell from the bathroom window to the floor, knocking out her two front teeth. Even though Ms. Walton was trying to sneak through the ladies room window to avoid paying the $3.50 cover charge, the jury said the night club had to pay her $12,000....oh, yeah, plus dental expenses. Go figure.

Ok. Here we go!! Drum roll ...

This year's runaway First Place Stella Award winner was: Mrs. Merv Grazinski of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, who purchased new 32-foot Winnebago motor home. On her first trip home, from an OU football game, having driven on to the freeway, she set the cruise control at 70 mph and calmly left the driver's seat to go to the back of the Winnebago to make herself a sandwich not surprisingly, the motor home left the freeway, crashed and overturned. Also not surprisingly, Mrs. Grazinski sued Winnebago for not putting in the owners manual that she couldn't actually leave the driver's seat while the cruise control was set. The Oklahoma jury awarded her, are you sitting down? $1,750,000 PLUS a new motor home. Winnebago actually changed their manuals as a result of this suit, just in case Mrs. Grazinski has any relatives who might also buy a motor home.

THE PEOPLE HAVE TO ACT

It is clear that crime victims in Montreal, Quebec, Canada cannot depend on police, politicians, lawyers or even judges to protect our rights.

The Montreal Police have told me that crime victims have no rights. Only "the accused" have rights. Criminals have rights. Crime victims do not.

Everyone tells me that a crime victim has to hire a lawyer. In other words, you have to go to civil court and you have to be a rich crime victim to pay for it. That becomes even more problematic when everything that belongs to you has been stolen.

Furthermore, even if you could hire a lawyer and go to civil court and live long enough for the case to be heard and judged, you could only get money from the criminals who, in this case, have stolen everything of value from me and from my family - all our jewellery, my parents' home and all of my fathers life's savings.

You could not recover your most precious personal belongings or the many years stolen from your family, or your reputation - or your health. It will not cure my cancer brought on by these years of anguish.

You could not bring your parents back from the dead and prove to them what the thief did so they would understand what really happened before returning to their graves.

If you are not in love with money, but only with justice, civil court is useless.

In order to obtain the protection and benefits of Canadian law,

we must break the law.

At least then we become entitled to all the rights and perks of criminals.

Unfortunately, I cannot think of any way I could break the law without harming anyone. Even shattering someone's store window would risk someone being hurt. It would be noisy and messy and very upsetting. And innocent victims would be harmed. And then Dawn McSweeney and her "partners in crime" would have real ammunition to accuse me - once again - of being insane and dangerous. Catch 22.

So I'm thinking about it. When you have fought for justice peacefully and politely day and night for fifteen years and justice is still being denied, you have to consider alternate plans.

Remember, I am 75 years old and a cancer patient, so I can't do anything really dramatic. But I'm thinking about it.

ROMAN CATHOLIC SEX ABUSE WORLD WIDE - CLIMB UP ON MY KNEE, SONNY BOY !

February 10, 2012 - A Quebec priest has been sentenced to three years in prison for sexually abusing 13 boys over more than a decade.

The abuse took place between 1973 and 1985 when Raymond-Marie Lavoie was a teacher at the now-defunct St-Alphonse Seminary near Quebec City.

He was responsible at the time for overseeing the dormitory.

Lavoie received the sentence in a Quebec City courtroom today.

The Crown had been seeking an eight-year prison term and will appeal the sentence.

Kenya

In 2009 several people came forward with accusations of sexual molestation against an Italian priest working in the country. The Church gave assurances of an investigation, but this has not taken place. However Kenyan police say they found no evidence and believe Sesana is innocent.^[1]

In 2010 a young woman alleged that a Catholic priest had undertaken inappropriate sexual activity against her will, but the police & Church authorities had failed to follow up the allegations.^[2]

The 2011 Raidió Teilifís Éireann (RTE) documentary "A Mission To Prey" brought to notice Kenya's clerical abuse cases, which should have been handled with more transparency. It has subsequently emerged that this program made false allegations against a priest, Fr. Kevin Reynolds, which resulted in the priest being removed from his home and his parish ministry. RTE has subsequently apologised for this programme and has stated that Fr. Reynolds was innocent of the charges stated. RTE has nevertheless left access to this programme even though upwards of 32 Slander & Libel cases are pending.^[3]^[4]

In 2011 a Dutch bishop was reported to be under probe over alleged sex abuse, The Bishop was alleged to have abused a minor when he served as a priest in Ngong diocese some 18 years prior to the report.^[5]^[6]

Tanzania

St Michael's Catholic Boarding School, Soni, Tanzania

A prominent United Kingdom member of the order, Fr Kit Cunningham together with three other priests were exposed after Cunningham's death as paedophiles^[7]^[8]^[9]^[10] While at Soni, Cunningham perpetrated sexual abuse that made the school, according to one pupil, "a loveless, violent and sad hellhole". Other pupils recall being photographed naked, hauled out of bed at night to have their genitals fondled and other sexual abuse.^[8]^[11] Although known about by the Rosminians before Cunningham's death in 2010, the abuse was only publicly revealed by the media in 2011^[12]^[13]^[14]^[14]^[15]^[16]^[17]

Philippines

In 2002 the Catholic Church apologized for sexual abuses, including adultery, homosexuality and child abuse by two hundred priests over the previous 20 years.^[18]

In 2003 at least 34 priests were suspended in a sex abuse scandal involving sexual harassment of women. 20 were from a single diocese.^[19]

In 2011, a priest accused of sexually abusing a 17-year old female minor is sheltered by his Bishop, despite calls for his surrender to civil authorities.^[20]

Former parish priest Bruno Vos of Nieuwmoer parish in Kalmthout was officially charged with rape of a minor by the Belgian judiciary. There are also allegations of possession of child pornography included in the charge.^[22]

Croatia

Archdiocese of Zagreb

Ivan Čuček convicted ^[23] in 2000 for sexual abuse of 37 young girls, sentenced to three years in prison, which was later reduced by Supreme Courtto ^[24] to one and a half years.

Archdiocese of Rijeka

Drago Ljubičić convicted in 2007 was Catholic priest on the isle of Rab sentenced to three years in prison for molesting five teenage boys. He will be the first Catholic priest to serve prison time for sexual abuse in Croatia.^[25] When asked by Catholic press agency Glas Koncila (prior to scandal) why children avoid going to church he blamed 'strong influence of communism on island Rab'.^[26]

Italy

It is difficult to ascertain the actual statistics for clerical sexual abuse in Italy because the Italian Government has a treaty with the Vatican that guarantees areas of immunity to Vatican officials, including bishops and priests.^[29]

Three former students have claimed abuse and 65 former students signed statements saying that they or other students were abused by Catholic priests when attending the Antonio Provolo Institute for the Deaf, a Catholic school for deaf children in Verona, Italy. The abuse is alleged to have occurred from the 1950s to 1980s, and was reportedly conducted by 24 priests including the late bishop of Verona.^[30]

Malta

84 allegations had been made as of April 2010 and Lawrence Grech, one of many alleged victims complains that he was abused in an orphanage. Mr Grech complained in 2010 that the Church had been investigating cases for seven years without doing enough that is effective. The pope spoke to Mr Grech and approved his courage in coming forward.^[31]^[32]^[33]-A Maltese court found that Fr Charles Pulis and Fr Godwin Scerri sexually abused children and sentenced the two men to six years and five years in prison respectively. The church regretted delays before there were proper investigations into the abuse and promised to defrock Fr Pulis.

Fr. Anthony Mercieca, who was accused by former Florida Congressman Mark Foley of molesting him as a teenager and has admitted "inappropriate encounters", now lives in Malta.^[35]

Netherlands

Cases of sexual abuse by religious members of the Roman Catholic Church in the Netherlands can since 1995 be notified to a central church institution, called Secretariaat Rooms-Katholiek Kerkgenootschap (SRRK).^[36]^[37]

In 1993, Father H.H.M. Jansen is denounced for sexual abuse during his activities as military pastor and as a faculty member of the seminary of Rolduc.^[38]

On 14 May 1998 damages of € 56.800 were paid by the diocese of Rotterdam to the victim of sexual abuse by a diocesan priest in order to avoid civil prosecution.^[39]

Father J. Ceelen, pastor of the parishes of Lieshout and of Mariahout (municipality of Laarbeek) quits his post after allegations of sexual abuse on 1 September 2005.^[40]

In February 2010 Salesians were accused of sexual abuse in their juvenate Don Rua in 's-Heerenberg. Salesian bishop of Rotterdam van Luyn pleaded for a thorough investigation.^[41]

In 2011 the Deetman Commission, acting on the 2010 request of the Conference of Bishops and the Dutch Religious Conference, reported on its inquiry into abuse cases from 1945 to 2010 affecting children entrusted to the care of the church in the Netherlands.^[42]

Norway

Georg Müller, a former Catholic Bishop in Trondheim, Norway, has admitted to sexually abusing an altar boy in the 1980s when he served as a priest there. Müller, who retired as bishop in 2009, said there were no other victims.^[43]^[44]

Poland

In March 2002 the Archbishop of Poznań, Juliusz Paetz, stepped down following accusations, which he denied, of sexually molesting young priests.^[45]

Diocese of Płock

In early 2007 allegations surfaced that former Bishop Stanislaw Wielgus (later very briefly Archbishop of Warsaw) was aware that several priests in his former diocese of Płock were sexually abusing minors.^[46]

Slovenia

Archdiocese of Ljubljana

Franc Frantar - detained in 2006^[47] for sexual abuse of up to 16 minors. He was later sentenced to five years in prison.^[48] He initially escaped prosecution by escaping to Malawi to work there as a missionary, but returned to Slovenia after Interpol warrant was issued.

Sweden

Diocese of Stockholm

One child was sexually abused by a priest several years in the late 1950s. When the child raised the issue at the time, the priest was protected and the abuse was kept quiet by the church. The victim finally reported the abuse to the Stockholm diocese in December 2005. The victim demanded a public apology from the church. In June 2007 Sweden's Catholic church made a public apology in two newspapers.^[49]

There have been several cases of sex abuse in the United Kingdom including:

Passionist Congregation

In the 1990s, abuse by a Father Eugene Kennan (baptismal name John Joseph), a priest of the Passionist Congregation, originally from Liverpool, came to light. An extremely powerful man who had held high positions in the order, he had given retreats and counselled vulnerable girls over many decades, including those in care and approved schools in the 1960s. A man of great charisma, he was able to abuse girls in whom he inspired devotion. It was, however, the sexual abuse of a former novice nun that first brought the abuse to light, after which many women came forward with their own testimonies of his sexual abuse. One story he would tell the girls was that he had trained as a gynaecologist, which led to intimate physical examinations. In the late 1990s Father Eugene was relieved of his official duties and was investigated by the police, however his age and failing health saved him from prison. He died in 2002. The scandal was largely covered up by the superior of the Passionist Order, Father Nicholas Postlethwaite, who managed to keep it out of the English newspapers, though it was mentioned in the Irish press.^{[citation needed]}

Benedictine Order

Buckfast Abbey School

In 2007 two former monks from Buckfast Abbey were sentenced for sexually abusing boys.^[50]^[51]

Ealing Abbey / St Benedict's School

In 2009 a monk of Ealing Abbey and former headmaster of the junior department of its associated school, St Benedict's, was sentenced to eight years in prison for sexually abusing boys.^[52]

Belmont Abbey / Belmont Abbey School

In 2004 former priest John Kinsey of Belmont Abbey, Herefordshire, was sentenced at Worcester Crown Court for 5 years for sexual assaults on schoolboys in the mid 1980s.^[53]^[54]

North America

Canada

Archdiocese of St. John's

In the 1990s, criminal proceedings began against members of the Christian Brothers in Newfoundland.

Mexico

Fr. Marcial Maciel (1920–2008) founded the Legion of Christ, a Catholic order of priests originating in Mexico. Nine former seminarians of his order accused Maciel of molestation.^[55] One retracted his accusation, saying that it was a plot intended to discredit the Legion. Maciel maintained his innocence of the accusations.

United States

Archdiocese of Anchorage

In 2007, the Society of Jesus made a $50 million payout to over 100 Inuits who alleged that they had been sexually abused. The settlement did not require them to admit molesting Inuit children, but accusations involved 13 or 14 priests who allegedly molested these children for 30 years.^[56]

In 2008, the Diocese of Fairbanks, a co-defendant in the case, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, claiming inability to pay the 140 plaintiffs filing claims against the diocese for alleged sexual abuse by priests or church workers during this period.^[57]^[58]^[59]

Archdiocese of Boston

Allegations of sexual misconduct by priests of the Archdiocese of Boston, and following revelations of a cover-up by the Archbishop of Boston, Cardinal Bernard Francis Law, became known in 2004, causing Roman Catholics in other dioceses of the United States to investigate similar situations. Cardinal Law's actions prompted public scrutiny of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and the steps taken in response to past and current allegations of sexual misconduct by priests. The events in the Archdiocese of Boston became a national scandal.

Archdiocese of Chicago

Daniel McCormack, a self-confessed sexually abusive priest was sentenced to five years in prison for abusing five boys (8–12 years) in 2001.^[60]

Diocese of Crookston

Rev. Joseph Palanivel Jeyapaul was charged with molesting two teenage girls at a Catholic church in Greenbush, Minnesota, a small rural town near the Canadian border. The abuse occurred in 2004, and charges were filed in 2006 and amended in 2007.^[61] Without facing legal punishment, Jevapaul returned to his home diocese in Ootacamund, India, where today he works in the church's diocesan office. A Roseau County, Minnesota attorney is seeking to extradite the priest from India in a criminal case involving one of the girls.^[62] The Archbishop of Madras, India (Madras is now called "Chennai") has asked Jeyapaul to return to the US to face the charges.^[63] Jevapaul has said that he will not fight extradition if the US seeks it.^[64]

Diocese of Davenport

On October 10, 2006, the Diocese of Davenport filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.^[65]

Archdiocese of Denver

In July 2008 the Archdiocese of Denver paid a settlement of $5.5 million dollars to 18 claims of alleged sexual abuse perpetrated by two clerics between the years of 1954 and 1981.^[66]

Archdiocese of Dubuque

In 2006 the Archdiocese settled a number of claims of sexual abuse, and the Archbishop offered a personal apology.^[67]

Diocese of Fall River

Father James Porter was a Roman Catholic priest who was convicted of molesting 28 children;^[68] He admitted sexually abusing at least 100 of both sexes over a period of 30 years, starting in the 1960s.^[69] Bishop Sean O'Malley settled 101 abuse claims and initiated a zero-tolerance policy against sexual abuse. He also instituted one of the first comprehensive sexual abuse policies in the Roman Catholic Church.^[70]

Diocese of Honolulu

Main article: Sexual abuse scandal in Honolulu diocese

Reverend Joseph Bukoski, III, SS.CC., Honolulu, Hawaii, a member of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary was canonically removed in 2003 as the pastor of Maria Lanakila Catholic Church in Lahaina by Bishop Francis X. DiLorenzo for allegations relating to sexual improprieties some 30 years earlier. Fr. Bukoski issued a written public apology to his victim on November 12, 2005.

Reverend Mr. James "Ron" Gonsalves, Wailuku, Hawaii, Gonsalves the administrator of Saint Ann Roman Catholic Church in Waihee, Maui, pleaded guilty on May 17, 2006 to several counts of sexual assault on a 12-year-old male. Bishop Clarence Richard Silva has permanently withdrawn his faculties and has initiated laicization proceedings against Deacon Gonsalves with the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

Archdiocese of Los Angeles

The Archdiocese of Los Angeles agreed to pay out 60 million dollars to settle 45 lawsuits it still faces over 450 other pending cases. According to the Associated Press, 22 priests were involved in the settlement with cases going back as far as the 1930s.^[71] 20 million dollars of this was paid by the insurers of the archdiocese. The main administrative office of the archdiocese is due to be sold to cover the cost of these and future law suits. The archdiocese will settle about 500 cases for about $600 million.^[72]

Diocese of Memphis

The Diocese of Memphis reached a $2 million settlement with a man who was abused as a boy by Father Juan Carlos Duran, a priest with a history of sexual misconduct with juveniles in St. Louis, Panama, and Bolivia.^[73]

Archdiocese of Miami

Since 1966, the Archdiocese of Miami Insurance Programs have paid $26.1 million in settlement, legal, and counseling costs associated with sexual misconduct allegations made by minors involving priests, laity and religious brothers and sisters.^[74]

Archdiocese of Milwaukee

Main article: Sexual abuse scandal in Catholic archdiocese of Milwaukee

A 2003 report on the sexual abuse of minors by clergy in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee revealed that allegations of sexually assaulting minors had been made against 58 ordained men.^{[citation needed]} By early 2009, the Archdiocese of Milwaukee had spent approximately $26.5 million in attorney fees and settlements. Under Archbishop Timothy Dolan the archdiocese was able to avoid bankruptcy from lawsuits.^[75]

A Wisconsin priest, the Rev. Lawrence C Murphy, who taught at the former St. John School for the Deaf in the Milwaukee suburb of St. Francis, Wisconsin from 1950 to 1974, allegedly molested more than 200 deaf boys. Several U.S. bishops warned the Vatican that failure to act on the matter could embarrass the church. Murphy was moved by then Milwaukee Archbishop William E Cousins to Superior, Wisconsin, a small city near Lake Superior, where he spent his final 24 years working with children in parishes, schools and a juvenile detention center. He died in 1998. As of March 2010, there were four outstanding lawsuits against the Archdiocese of Milwaukee in the case.^[76]^[77]

Diocese of Oakland

In 1981, the former Rev. Stephen Kiesle was convicted for tying up and molesting two boys in a California church rectory.^[78] From 1981 to 1985, Bishop John Stephen Cummins, who oversaw Kiesle, contacted the Vatican about defrocking him. Then-cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, the future Pope Benedict XVI, responded by letter that the case needed more time, as it was "necessary to consider the good of the Universal Church" and "the detriment that granting the dispensation" could provoke among the faithful. In 1987, the Vatican defrocked Kiesle. The letter was widely regarded as evidence of Ratzinger's role in blocking the removal of pedophile priests.^[79]^[80] Vatican officials responded that that interpretation rested on a misreading of the letter, in which the issue was not whether Kiesle should be defrocked but whether he should be granted the dispensation he had requested from the obligation of chastity. By refusing to grant such a dispensation right away in the Kiesle case, Ratzinger was actually being tough with an abuser, not lax.^[81]^[82]

Archdiocese of Omaha

During his tenure as the Bishop of Helena, Montana, Archbishop Elden Francis Curtiss chose to reassign a priest who had been accused of pedophilia in 1959, later admitting that he had not properly examined the church's personnel file on the individual concerned. Curtiss faced similar criticism in 2001 in regard to a priest accused of accessing child pornography. Curtiss, it was alleged, had failed to bring the case to the attention of the authorities, and had chosen to send the priest for counseling and to reassign the priest, removing him from his high-school teaching position but reassigning him to a middle-school.^[83]

Diocese of Orange, California

On January 3, 2005 Bishop Tod Brown of the Diocese of Orange apologized to 87 alleged victims of sexual abuse and announced a settlement of $100 million following two years of mediation.

Diocese of Palm Beach

Joseph Keith Symons resigned as ordinary in 1998 after admitting he molested five boys while he was a pastor.^[84]

Diocese of Peoria

Coadjutor Bishop John J. Myers of Peoria was among the two-thirds of sitting bishops and acting diocese administrators that the Dallas Morning News found had allowed priests accused of sexual abuse to continue working.^[85]

In 2005, Rev. Francis Engels pleaded guilty to molesting a Peoria altar boy on trips to Milwaukee in the early 1980s.^[86]

Archdiocese of Philadelphia

According to a 2005 investigation, while serving as assistant vicar for administration in 1996, Bishop Cistone was involved with silencing a nun who tried to alert parishioners at St. Gabriel parish about abuse by a priest. According to the report, there were several other instances of priest sexual abuse that Cistone was complicit in covering up.^[87] In February 2011, Monsignor William Lynn, former secretary of the clergy for the Philadelphia Archdiocese, was charged with child endangerment, marking the first time that a high-ranking official has been charged since the eruption of sex abuse scandals nearly ten years prior.^[88] Lynn was found by a grand jury to have placed pedophiles in posts involving contact with children, which led directly to the sexual assault of two boys. Three priests and one teacher face rape charges.

Diocese of Phoenix

On November 21, 2005, Monsignor Dale Fushek of the Diocese of Phoenix was arrested and charged with 10 criminal misdemeanor counts related to alleged inappropriate sexual contact with teens and young adults.^[89]

Archdiocese of Portland

Main article: Sexual abuse scandal in Portland archdiocese

The Archdiocese of Portland filed for Chapter 11 reorganization on July 6, 2004, hours before two abuse trials were set to begin.^{[citation needed]} Portland became the first Catholic diocese to file for bankruptcy. An open letter to the archdiocese's parishioners explained the archbishop's motivation.

Archdiocese of San Antonio

John Salazar was sentenced to life in prison for sexually assaulting a 18-year-old parishioner.^[90]

Diocese of San Diego

On February 27, 2007, the Diocese of San Diego filed for Chapter 11 protection, hours before the first of about 150 lawsuits was due to be heard.^{[citation needed]}

Diocese of Savannah

In October, 2009, the diocese of Savannah paid $4.24 million to settle a lawsuit which alleged that Lessard allowed a priest named Wayland Brown to work in the diocese when Lessard knew that Brown was a serial child molester who posed a danger to children.^[91]

Diocese of Spokane

Under Bishop William S. Skylstad the Diocese of Spokane declared bankruptcy in December 2004. As part of its bankruptcy, the diocese has agreed to pay at least $48 million as compensation. This payout has to be agreed to by the victims and a judge before it will be made. According to federal bankruptcy judge, Gregg W. Zive, money for the settlement would come from insurance companies, the sale of church property, contributions from Catholic groups and from the diocese's parishes.^[92]

Diocese of Stockton

Main article: Sexual abuse scandal in Stockton diocese

Fr. Oliver O'Grady molested multiple children in Stockton.^[93] The 2006 documentary Deliver Us From Evil is based on accusations that Bishop Roger Mahony knew that Oliver O'Grady was an active pedophile.^[94]

Diocese of Tucson

The Diocese of Tucson filed for bankruptcy in September, 2004. It reached an agreement with plaintiffs, which the bankruptcy judge approved on June 11, 2005, specifying terms that included allowing the diocese reorganization to continue in return for a $22.2 million settlement.^[95]

Australia

Archdiocese of Sydney

Ross Murrin: Catholic brother pleaded guilty to sexually abusing eight male students.^[96]

Archdiocese of Melbourne

Main article: Sexual abuse scandal in Melbourne archdiocese

There were several cases of sexual abuse in the Melbourne Archdiocese.

Michael Charles Glennon: former diocesan priest, sentenced to at least 15 years in jail for sexually abusing four Aboriginal boys between 1984 and 1991.^[97]

Gerry Francis Ridsdale: convicted in 1994, he pled guilty on 46 sexual offenses.^[98]

Wilfred James Baker: sentenced to four years in prison (parole after 2 years) for crimes involving eight boys.^[99]

David Daniel: sentenced to six years jail, with parole after 4.5 years, for molesting four boys, a girl and an adult male.^[100]

Rex Elmer: sentenced in 1998 to five years jail (with parole after 3 years 4 months) for molesting 12 boys at St Vincent's orphanage in South Melbourne.^[101]

Paul Pavlou: convicted on 29 June 2009 of committing an indecent act with a child under 16 and of being knowingly in possession of child pornography. He was sentenced to an 18 month jail sentence suspended for 24 months and to a two-year community based order. He was registered on the Sex Offenders Register for 15 years. These offences occurred in 2005-2006 while he was the priest at Healesville in the Archdiocese of Melbourne.^[102]^[103]

John Ayres SDB: The Salesian Order is alleged to have had an Australian victim sign a secrecy agreement and paid him compensation in 2000 in regard to allegations about Ayer's actions.^[104]

Francis Klep SDB: convicted of indecent assault in 1994, and charged with an additional five counts. He moved to Samoa, but in 2004 the Samoan government made moves to deport him from the country after becoming aware of the previous conviction and charges.^[105]

New Zealand

The abuse scandal at the Marylands School is an important chapter in the clerical abuse affairs in New Zealand.

In 2011 former Marist Brother Bede Thomas Hampton was convicted in relation to sexual actions at St Joseph's College in Masterton.^[106]

Argentina

Julio Grassi was found guilty (by a three-judge panel of the Criminal Court Oral 1 Morón) of one count of sexual abuse and one count of corrupting a minor in the "Happy Children's Foundation".^[107]

Archdiocese of Santa Fe de la Vera Cruz

Allegations of sexual abuse on 47 young seminarists surfaced in 1994.^[108]

Brazil

Diocese of Anápolis

Fr. Tarcísio Tadeu Spricigo was arrested after his checklist for choosing victims was found and given to police. He had molested children in at least five parishes.^[109]^[110]^[111] The case was one of those featured in an episode of the BBC's Panorama documentary series titled Sex Crimes and the Vatican and became an example of the Vatican's policies regarding pedophile priests.^[112] In November 2005 he was sentenced to a prison term of over 14 years.^[113]^[114]
Fr. Felix Barbosa Carreiro was arrested and charged with child sexual abuse in the northeastern state of Maranhão after police seized him in a hotel room with four teenage boys.^[115]

Archdiocese of Penedo

In 2010 Authorities in Brazil began an investigation into three priests after a video allegedly showing a priest sexually abusing an altar boy was broadcast on the SBT television station.^[116]

Chile

Archdiocese of Santiago

José Andrés Aguirre Ovalle, aka "Cura Tato", was found guilty of nine sexual abuse charges by the highest court of this country. In 2004 Aguirre was sentenced to 12 years in jail. At the beginning of this trial, the Catholic Church was sentenced to pay 50 million in damages to the victims, but then this sentence was revoked by the supreme court.^[117]

Ricardo Muñoz Quinteros, priest of Melipilla, was charged in 2010 with eight cases of sexually abusing minors, including his own daughter. Also, is investigated for producing pronografic material involving children.^[118]

In 2010, the Catholic Church began an investigation into sexual abuse allegedly committed by Fr. Fernando Karadima, after four people came forward with allegations of abuse.^[119] He was found guilty and convicted by the Vatican in February 18, 2011. He was sentenced to a life of prayer and penitence, banned from any contact with his ex parishioners and forbidden to perform any priestly ministry in public or private except for mass by himself. He is currently living in a home for seniors where the Archbishop of Santiago put him under the care of some nuns. Karadima still does not acknowledge any wrongdoing after several testimonies helped convict him.^[120]

Diocese of Valparaíso

Eduardo Olivares Martínez, was found guilty of a five sexual abuse against underprivileged minors. In 2006 was sentenced to 3 years in jail and to pay 15 million pesos in damages.^[121]

In 2010, Juan Henríquez Zapata was indicted for using minors for sex services.^[122]

Diocese of Rancagua

Jorge Galaz Espinoza, former Director of El Pequeño Cottolengo, was found guilty of repeated violations against two mentally disabled minors. In 2005 Galaz was sentenced to 15 years in jail.

Diocese of Punta Arenas

Jaime Low Cabezas, was found guilty of a sexual abuse against a 15 year-old minor. In 2009 Low was sentenced to 3 years in jail.

Víctor Hugo Carrera, was found guilty of a sexual abuse against one underprivileged minor. In 2005 Carrera was sentenced to 541 days in jail and to pay 2 million pesos in damages to the family of the victim. The case involved the bishop of the diocese, who was accused of protecting Carrera and facilitating his escape to Bolivia, where he lived for two years.^[123]

Peru

In 2007, Daniel Bernardo Beltrán Murguía Ward, a 42 year-old SCV consecrated layman was found by the National Police in a hostel in Cercado de Lima with a 12 year-old boy, of whom he was taking sexually explicit pictures. The boy was initially lured by Murguía Ward in Miraflores, where he was given Pokémon figures in exchange for photos of his intimate parts. When Murguía Ward was caught, he had paid the boy 20 soles ($7 USD) for his services in the hostel. The police have reported that pictures of two other boys were also found on Murguía Ward's camera and that the boy has claimed he received oral sex from Murguía Ward. These charges have been denied by the accused. Murguía Ward has since been removed from the SCV for his alleged misconduct.^[124]^[125]^[126]

I appreciate your taking the time to respond to my message. I have been fighting for justice day and night for fifteen years. I wrote to Kathleen Weil about this years ago. She just ignored me. I am a veteran at this now. It is the same story all the time. I have stacks of files of letters and information going back over the years from the moment I called 911 and the police came and helped the thief.

After they put me out in the street and warned me never to return to my home, they just drove away leaving me alone out in front of my home without as much as a coat in October - and they never filed a report. I reported to the police station on Mariette myself, and I was told that I should just be patient and everything would be returned to me.

I have reported all the details of the case on my blog. No one is responsible and my case is in nobody's jurisdiction. Mostly my appeals are just ignored. And so I have lost all my life's precious belongings, years with my parents, my siblings, and my health. I can understand how frustrating it can be to hear from Marlene Jennings that this case is not in her jurisdiction. I'm afraid she's right. Any problem that has to do with police is a provincial matter. That's not to say that as a federal MP there's nothing I can do. However, I can impose myself on provincial matters.

What I suggest you do is contact your local MNA. For NDG that would be Kathleen Weil. Her office is located at 5252 de Maisonneuve boul. And her telephone number is 514-489-7581. For sure she can't say that this is not her jurisdiction. In the event that your MNA doesn't respect you or doesn't hear your cause, that is when maybe your MP could do something about it like calling your MNA to better understand her position.

Although I imagine my answer to be somewhat disappointing, I hope that the information I give you can lead you to some answer. By no means do I not care for your case, I just have to respect the order of our system. Please, keep me inform of your situation.

I found your little calendar in my mailbox yesterday, Mlle Morin.

In my opinion, it was a mistake to try to imitate the calendars sent out for years by Marlene Jennings. You probably regard the effort as a friendly gesture, and for that, I thank you. But as one who has been on the political scene for decades, I see this as an example, not of economy - but of inferiority.

Your little calendar is useless, as far as I can see. There are all these tiny squares into which no human hand could fit an appointment of even a phone number. It was a waste of time and money and leaves the voter wanting something substantial. Better to have sent your business card. Period.

Further, you have set up your offices in Lachine, rather than in NDG. My impression is that you have aligned yourself with Francophone voters and distanced yourself from the "others" of NDG.

And third - You have ignored my appeals for justice.
I can see no reason why I should support you or the NDP. Can you ?

Thank you for taking the time to write to me and in sharing your opinions. Let me explain myself. In regards to the calendar, it is a gift offered by the House of Commons on behalf of MPs from all parties. Therefore it is not a partisan action.

In order to have less expensive calendars, they have decided to shrink it. The idea is not to provide everybody with an agenda but rather a symbolic gift to everyone. Also, when thinking about those less fortunate and suffering from poverty, this gift might help them organize the year.

Furthermore, I'm an MP for the riding of NDG/Lachine, which means that my office has to be somewhere in there. Please know that language was not part of the decision making process. In fact, in both neighborhoods there's a strong English speaking community. Rather, I based my decision on the rental prices as well as the importance of finding a centrally located place.

Finally, I would like to know more about what do you mean when you say I have ignored your appeals for justice. Can you provide me with more details?

Hello Isabelle,

Thank you very much for writing and explaining about the silly "calendar-not-an-agenda". I'm glad to learn that it was not you, but the whole House of Commons, that wasted money on that useless PR.

And I understand about the location of your riding office.

As for "ignoring my appeals." I wrote to you many weeks ago asking for your attention to my case. I did not receive a reply.

I am a crime victim. Dawn McSweeney and those she proudly calls her "partners in crime" on her own blog, not only robbed me - but also my entire family - with the help of a Montreal Police officer.

Because a Montreal Police officer helped the thief, the police have refused repeatedly to take any action to recover our belongings or to bring the criminals before a judge in criminal court. The cover up has continued from the day of the crime to this day.

I have been pleading for the return of our belongings and property for fifteen years, day and night. In 2008, Marlene Jennings stated at a Meet the Candidates gathering - "Mrs. Carter's rights were violated three times." She repeated that statement at Rosedale United Church in NDG shortly thereafter. But then she was re-elected and she "disappeared."

All I ever hear from every person in authority is " That is not in my Jurisdiction. So I fight on day and night without ceasing.

I want to know if you are going to be any different. Do you have the character, the courage, the love of justice, to step out of the political comfort zone and actually stand up for justice ?

In response to your questions:

When I was being attacked, on October 7, 1996, I managed to call 911. I expected the police to come and help me. Instead, the police officer took me out of my home by my arm. Before he took me out the door, he stated in front of my mother who had just attacked me, that I could not take any of my belongings with me and I must never return to the house. Then the two officers left me in the street in front of my home, without as much as a coat, and they just drove away. I learned later that they did not even file a report.

I was left in shock, homeless and destitute. Every precious thing I owned was in the house under the control of Dawn McSweeney and her boyfriend, Alex Lavergne - as well as my aged parents who did not realize what Dawn had done.

I went to the police station on Mariette again and again, begging them to go to the house and see for themselves. Everything I owned was in my two rooms, in boxes and cases and bags, all marked with my name and inventory numbers that corresponded with my inventories, receipts, appraisals. insurance documents etc. I had stored my best things there starting from about 1988 - But the police told me that I should just be patient and everything would be returned to me. They refused to investigate - again and again.

When Dawn finally returned the things she didn't want in Mid-March, 1997, I found my inventories and documents among the boxes but all my most precious valuables were gone. She returned cases full of EMPTY little jewellery boxes.

Once I had the documents, I gave the police at Mariette station all the proofs of ownership. That was Mid-March, 1997. Dawn had all those months, night and day, to take everything she wanted. Fortunately, she did not know about the documents. It was jewellery and things like that she wanted, not files and papers.

It was then that the police launched what appeared to be a serious investigation, but fingerprints "disappeared" once they took the evidence from my apartment, and the detectives told me that Dawn McSweeney and Alex Lavergne refused to take polygraph tests.

I told the police I would gladly take a polygraph test. They said it was not necessary because they believed me and they refused to give me the test. And they just shut me out ever since.

Over the years, I brought floppy disks full of information to the police - that was before I had my blogs - and I begged them again and again to go to the house and recover my belongings. But they just ignored me.

You can read on my blog about Det. Sgt. Sylvie Laverdiere who told me to do my own investigation and report to her. I did that. I gave her a detailed written report. Then she went to the house and, standing at the front door, she asked Dawn McSweeney for my Borg winter coat. Dawn gave it to her. And that was all. Laverdiere did nothing to recover my jewellery or any of my other precious belongings. Case closed.

They keep telling me the case is closed. It will never be closed until Dawn McSweeney returns everything she stole from me and from my family.

You ask why they put me out in the street. I didn't know. I was in total shock. I expected Dawn to pilfer. But I never expected my own mother to attack me. I had begged my mother to keep Dawn out of my rooms. When the police removed me from my home, everything I had was in Dawn's hands totally under her control, and the police refused to do anything to help me.

The police didn't tell me why they were doing it. They just took me out of my home and warned me never to return. I don't know what my mother said to them. I only know that my mother was under Dawn McSweeney's control. Whatever Dawn said, my mother believed because I was the evil one in the house who had converted to Christianity.

It was about four years later that I learned by accident why my mother attacked me. She thought I had stolen money from her and given it to St. Thomas' Anglican Church. All the details are on my blog.

At the Meet the Candidates assembly in NDG on October 7, 2008, Liberal Member of Parliament, Marlene Jennings, stated before all the candidates and the public, "Mrs. Carter's rights were violated three times". She repeated that statement at Rosedale United Church shortly afterward.

The three violations

1. In 1996, the Montreal Police refused to file a report of the initial robbery. They have continued to refuse to act ever since.

2. In 2007, immediately following the death of my mother, the same group of criminals obtained a court order accusing me of being insane and dangerous. I was released from hospital unconditionally as soon as the doctors found out what my accusers had done and why. After my mother's death, we learned that -

3. In 2005, the same group who call themselves "partners in crime" created a will in my mother's name when she was 92 years old and handicapped physically and mentally. My mother was kept in total isolation by these criminals for ten years - until her death. The sole beneficiaries of the 2005 will were the same people who robbed me and obtained the court order against me. Then it became clear why these criminals tried to discredit me and silence me.

Marlene Jennings was re-elected to Parliament on October 14, 2008. She began helping me with the case.

On December 18, 2008, Diane of Marlene Jennings' office phoned and told me that Marlene Jennings expected me to pursue the case on my own. When I reminded her of Mrs. Jennings' promises to help me, she said Mrs. Jennings would call and arrange to meet with me by January 8th or 9th (2009)

It is now January, 2012. I am still working night and day to try to find someone in authority who cares enough about justice to act in this case.
