Anna(not her true name was born in Tallin but as rumours of war came, her father moved his family into the country side where his brother had a farm. Anna’s father later joined the family as it was too unsafe to live in the capital. As the fighting came closer her father and uncle dug trenches so the she and her families could hide. As predicted fighting drew so close that fighting between the Germans and Russians was taking place on their uncle’s land while the family lay hidden in their covered trenches. The fighting escalated and the sounds of guns grew louder. Anna being just a young child grew so frightened that she desperately needed to use the outdoor facilities and without hesitation fled from their hiding place and bolted right into the middle of the fighting. The two lines were so startled by the young child that they called “ hold fire it’s only a young child let her go”. Unfortunately they were no fools, on her way back to her family, their places of hiding were exposed. Anna’s father and uncle were captured and the women and children were taken into German camps were they were used as kitchen help etc. From there Anna was put into a Russian camp and she told us that the Germans were bad but the Russians were worse by far. At the end of the war Anna got to England were she worked as a maid until she was able to come to Montreal where she met my uncle and married David(not real name). Anna did not talk of her past to any of us as this was too painful. We did know that once she was captured she was unable to find any of her family and didn’t know if any of them had survived.
Anna was in contact with the Red Cross and it was them after many years who found that her family had survived and they contacted her family to let them know where she was and helped the families in both countries, Canada and Estonia to correspond but Anna was unable to return to Estonia to visit them. Her Estonian family were very poor and had very little to live on. Through the Red Cross, Anna was able to send clothing and some food. After many years Anna and my uncle were able to go to a nearby country and telephone her family. What a wonderful blessing and it doesn’t end there, a few years later Anna and David were allowed to safely go back to Estonia to see her family but they were only able to meet in a hotel. I do not know if Anna was ever to see them again but once Estonia was liberated Anna’s niece was able to come to visit her in Canada where they visited sites in this wonderful country.
In all this story, I never told you much about Anna. Anna was a wonderful quiet spoken young woman full of love and totally devoted to David who was many years older.
I tell this story of Anna as she told it to my daughter who was doing a paper pertaining to war and this was the first time we heard her story. Thank you Anna we love you and miss you, you left us too soon R.I.P,
Written by: Carolyn Thornton White"C"https://www.blogger.com/profile/08159831612888972068noreply@blogger.com
